Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Looking for Remote Access program for offsite development

I commission a custom inventory and sales management program running as Alpha Anywhere windows desktop application. My software developer is located in another state and I also access my program from different offsite locations. For the last several years we have been using GoToMyPc to remotely access and make changes in this application since it allowed unattended access, remote printing and file transfer. Recently GoToMyPC dramatically raised their rates from $120/year to $800/year for 2 PCs. I would like feedback as to what other developers use for remote unattended access, file transfer and remote printing. Almost all the low cost or free remote access programs with similar features to GoToMyPc e.g Teamviewer have too many restrictions, difficult to setup or are limited functionality. The most advertised commercial programs are often more expensive because of extra features I do not need - accessing/enabling large number of PCs or users. I found a couple of moderately priced programs e.g. RemotePC and Anydesk which look promising. I would appreciate what forum members use.

    Hi Robert,
I have been using ssh with RDC for a long time. I don't know about remote printing (I hardly ever print anything directly to paper), but
the combination works quite well, and has the added benefit of not needing the user to be logged on to the PC.
The cost is minimal, although you or someone will need to basic maintenance.

I breifly looked up SSH for remote access. I think it requires port forwarding which I have not had success doing with my setup. The cable modem seem to cause problems with port forwarding. I tried NoMachine which requires knowing the IP address and some cases port forwarding. My cable modem seem to block the setup in port forwarding mode and I got a NT firewall timeout error.

These points are actually relatively simple to resolve.
The port forwarding is typically done from the router/firewall.
I don't know what settings you're using, but I'd certainly be willing to help.

I use Team Viewer but only a couple times a year to support users. Needless to say, the folks there want to charge an annual fee so I looked for an alternative. Someone recommended Remote Assistant. It has the look & feel of TV but a BIG plus it is freeware. I have used it 1/2 dozen times for testing and it works as expected.

I use SimpleHelp. You buy it, you own it. For me, it's great as I access many offices every day. That said, It's not cheap when measured to RDP.

If you have Win 10 Pro, you can use Remote Desktop Protocol, but I'd suggest strongly you create a VPN with a good router. Gregg's SSH tunnel is secure, too.

As added security, change the listening port from 3389 to something off that scale, and set to lock the system login for 30 minutes after 3 bad logins. Also, use really good passwords, and NEVER create scanning accounts or test user accounts on that machine. There are bots that scan for RDP and try user names like SCAN and weak passwords.

If you use multiple layers of protection, you can do this once for a nominal amount.
