Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can I use Google Drive to host my Database for Runtime Users

    Hello

I'm currently running our workspace/database on Alpha Anywhere 3.5 version 12.3 on a windows server, and I have around ten users in our office using Runtime accessing the data.

Because of Coronavirus, we need more employees to work at home, and I was thinking if it's possible to put our data in the cloud using Google Drive. And then everybody could access from home.

I tried to do this, but I can't access my Google drive from within the file locations in Alpha. Does anyone know if this is possible to use our workspace in the cloud? Our operating systems are Windows 10

I would be grateful for any advice.

I have been a user of Alpha for 25 years, starting in DOS! but have not needed to change our applications for many years, so I'm a bit lost now with the alpha product which has changed massively

    Thanks for your help

    David,

Don't even think about using Google drive for a runtime app. The performance would be atrocious.

What you need is a windows server (virtual or otherwise) and some form of remote Windows desktop service (we use TSPlus) to allow your users to connect to the application.

If the workload is relatively light, we may be able to host this for you. Either PM me, or reply below with details of disk space required, number of users and estimate of activity e.g. how many updates/reads per hour

Thanks very much for your appreciated reply Jon, thats very helpful.
We have a dedicated server already hosting our email accounts and some redundant websites, so i can look at converting this for our requirements, but thanks for your offer

        Kind regards

          David,

We have many users on our system (200+).

In light of the outbreak, we are deploying LogMeIn for a number of users to access their in-house computers remotely from home. I've been using it for years because there are things that just can't be done during normal working hours.

You might want to look into it.

            Hi Tom,

Have you considered DropBox? For the 10 users, you might consider it. You would need to Network Optimize so more than one could be on at once. I've just used it recently for my Document Manager and it works well. I can then append records, or copy and paste files, entered into the dropbox setup into my app running on the cloud via RDP/Terminal Services.

IMO using dropbox is asking for corruption. You have no control over who updates what records when and at what point dropbox decides to sync your copies. Just about workable with a single user solution, but even then I'd be wary as dropbox may lock files while you're tryingt o update them.

Re: Can I use Google Drive to host my Database for Runtime Users

Logmein / teamviewer etc. to connect back to the office is a reasonable solution for the short term, but you need somebody onsite to fix any problems with the PCs / reboot etc. etc. Also can prove rather expensive if you need to buy 12 month licenses to get you over this (hopefully) temporary blip.

Central server and remote desktop resolves most issues except in the event of the server falling off a cliff.

David, my offer is still open if you wish to discuss. We have spare capacity (up to 100Gb of SSD storage) and it looks like our servers will be very quiet if/when schools/nurseries are closed.

For what it's worth, I've used TeamViewer and while it's nice for emergencies, I am often
frustrated by the need to have someone local to put in passwords if I need to do anything as admin.
My solution was to setup a Linux vm as a ssh server. I connect to the ssh server, and then tunnel
to desktop computer in question using RDP or UltraVNC. The ssh server also allows me to tunnel
to my sqlServer. Cost = my time to setup and admin.

Make a teamviewer account and add the machine to that account.

Then you can open your account, see the systems connected to the account, and connect automagically.
