Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can Alpha Anywhere work with a barcode scanner to scan a Customer Drivers License into a UX Form?

We use MS Access with some thirdparty software called WizzForms from IDSCAN.net. We use a generic barcode scanner and it scans the barcode on a Drivers License, then automatically populates about 10-12 fields on an Access Form. Its works perfectly. I want to do this same thing with Alpha. Does anyone know if there might be some already created solution for scanning like this to UX fields? Thanks!

Coming from an MS Access background, there's nothing built-in to AA that would mirror this functionality. A barcode scanner is just another input device so you would need to parse the input and populate the appropriate fields accordingly which is presumably all the WizzForms is doing.

Thanks for that. That is what i suspected. I appreciate the reply. Are you an Alpha Expert? I'm looking for someone who can help me a bit. I have 15 years with Access and 1 year with AA, and am struggling immensely with basic AA issues. I am trying to recreate (more or less) our Access desktop program as an AA desktop program, hosted in the cloud. I'm looking for someone who can help me solve small problems such as using JS (which I dont know at all) on events of a field, to enable and disable other fields, and create clickable URL fields and a bunch of other issues. Would you be willing to help with some of that? Thanks so much! JM

I'm not sure what you mean by creating a "desktop" program hosted in the cloud. You could do that with your existing Access application with a thin client running on a server (like the former terminal services). I think what you're looking to do (as I've done with many of my previous Access applications) is convert them to web applications that run in the browser, especially since you said you're not familiar with javascript. That being the case, let me know what your questions are and I'll see if I can get you going but if you're looking for someone to write the code for you then that would be a different situation and most likely a billable option.

I know I built a web application that can scan a qrcode, not sure if it would also scan a barcode but I am sure there is a way using AA - like anything there is a learning curve. the best part is once you get the hang of it, it gets easier and I am living proof that someone with very little experience can build a complex application! I started off with hello world and had trouble doing that! Now, I can quickly build an app in a day if need be, and a much more complex one in a few days, and trust me when I say I am NOT an expert by any means!

Doing a quick Google search, the service you were using in Access (IDScan.net) provides a REST API for scanning a driver's licenses that returns a JSON object. Their site includes several examples including C#, etc. that could easily be done in AA using a web service. If you open the video library under in the Alpha IDE help and search for REST API you'll find details on how to do this. You would need to request the API key (if you don't already have one) and I don't see anything about pricing so it could very well be free.

What info are you wanting to retrieve from the license? Just the pertinent info, i.e., name, address, etc. or do you also need the image?

I believe the barcode on all Drivers Licenses just has basic name, address, dob, DL#... I dont need the image.

So what you're hoping to achieve is scan the license barcode and populate the basic information into textbox controls on a form?

yep. simple as that. I can use the wizzforms from idscan.net but then i have to pay an ongoing subscription fee and I was hoping to be able to create it in AA and not have to use any third party software. I have card reading boxes, where you insert the card and on withdrawal, it reads the barcode data, on each local PC. I own the hardware outright and am hoping to do this without having to pay for their software interface. Does that make sense? Email would be much easier for me if you want to email me at [email protected]. Thanks!

This sounds fairly simple. Can you post the output from a sample scan into word or something (change the details where applicable).

I created the UX easily enough, but when I went to get the output string from the Drivers License Reader hardware, it would not output anything. It may not work with out the Wizzforms software that I have to pay for. The device is a E-SEEK 200. any ideas?

I'm sure there's a twain driver or some type of driver that will work with your card reader without using the software. The real question is what licenses are you scanning? Are they all in the same format from the same state? My understanding is they vary, even within one state. I was told that California alone had 15 different versions. I would start by googling your device for a driver and let's get it to scan something to Word and go from there.

yes, i would sure think so. i have contacted the manufacturer and they are looking into it. I agree. can we please use email to write back and forth?
