Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Forward projection calcs. - are these possible in

I am trying to reproduce calculations developed in desktop application for the web. Could someone please advise or direct.
    Typical calculation

To predict an annualised cost for fuel consumption based on say several invoices over a period of say for example 160 days.

    Calculation in desktop
Totalise the days in the days field
Totalise the cost from the same invoices in the cost field
    Projected annualised cost=cost/days*(365)

Where in a web application can this type of calculation be included so that the user can view and use the result based on an appropriate filtered selection of invoices.

    Any help would be appreciated.

And if going a step further comparing projected cost against past costs and displaying results on chart on the web.

It would be hard to do this solely based on the results of a grid. The only summary-type fields that grids support are totals , averages, etc.; I don't believe that grids support operations on summary-type fields.

Having said that, you have 2 choices:
    1) If you are simply displaying records in your web page, and not entering data, you can do a query identical to the web page's filter, use the query to do calculations in Xbasic and display those results when the page is generated; or
    2) You can use Javascript to do the calculations based on what is shown in the page. The limitation here is that all the rows have to be on one page; you cannot create a grid with multiple pages (next - previous etc).

Either approach requires some advanced programming, I'm afraid. If you can limit the rows shown to one page of records, the Javascript approach is cleaner and possibly easier to implement. However if you want to *graph* the results and want to use v7's graphing capabilities you'll have to go with an Xbasic approach.

Thanks for the response Peter. I was afraid that might be the answer. I'll just have to do more studying and reading based on your direction using your first option.

      Thank you

        Robert,

You might consider abandoning good database design and create calculated fields in the tables (or in some set structure). The WAS would then just need to display the data.

I have used that technique to collapse sets into tables in order to get the page to show more quickly. For example, if a table refers to customer ID and I also want to display customer name, instead of basing the grid on a view, I put a calculated field in the table to lookup the name. Then, the grid only needs to display a single table and it appears much more quickly.

Along the same lines, as much as I like the idea of a tabbed grid linker, I've found the response to be much faster if you just pop up a window with the filtered child table. That also lets you have all the tabs open at once.

For example, I have a parent table of jobs and child tables of expenses, mileage and time. Good desktop design would put the job and client tables in a view and the three child tables in a tabbed grid linker. However, a tabbed grid linker takes a long time to appear the first time and then almost the same time again to change tabs. With separate windows, each one appears more quickly and changing windows is almost instant.
