Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Limit on the number of displayable records?

    Hi Guys

Just wondering if there is a limit on the number of records you can display on a single web component (ie setting the number of records to display is 0). So far I seem to be able to reach 100.

I know there are a lot of user and technical issues why you should not do so but unfortunately it is not up to me.

    Thanks
    Mike

RE: Limit on the number of displayable records?

Theoretically, there probably isn't a limit. I work with one web based application that can sometimes show documents that are hundreds of pages long. However, you will reach a practical limit long before you reach a technical limit. The documents I mention are prebuilt in html and load in sections and are still very slow. If you are listing data, such as in a grid, the page build times and download times will get slower and slower until the pages are unusable.

All of the text used to build the page must be transmitted from the server to the browser across whatever internet connection is being used. The download time for a long page could be very long. Many users give up and assume the page has failed after about 5 to 10 seconds. I have seen some pages with over 300 lines that take over 20 to load.

RE: Limit on the number of displayable records?

The folks at Alpha may not like me saying this again but you can show thousands of lines IF you do not use the Web Components. Of course, that defeats much of the benefit of using A5 for rapid development so you have to decide what is more important - lower development cost or more data displayed.

If you want to see about 9000 records displayed on one page (actually, about 5200 "normally" displayed and another 3800 +/- in the 'agent' and 'client' drop-down lists), go to my Trak-It SP Admin test page and enter the password "trakitsp" then click the "View All Status" button. When the status first appears it should show client number C0001. Use the drop-down to select "ALL" as the client and allow enough time to download a page with a size of about 700K. (This takes about 15 seconds on my cable connection, about 2 minutes on a slow DSL connection and much longer on a phone modem.)

This page is the Admin page which normal users do not have access to. PLEASE - DO NOT CLICK the "Prepare New Orders for Download" button. You won't see anything happen except a message will appear saying that the orders are ready for download. However, this will mean that existing examples have been deleted and other testers will not be able to see them any more until I restore them. If anyone does this by mistake, please e-mail me right away so I can restore the files.

I forgot to mention - after selecting "ALL" for the client, click the Re-Sort button.

your site is a really nice.

its a great example of what can be achieved if you know xbasic. the approach that you have taken to coding the page is very similar to how a .php or .asp page would have been coded, and the performance is excellent.

there is no question that if you hand code a page in xbasic you will get better performance than if you use a Grid component - it will just take you longer to code the page in the first place.
