Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Search Button Visible Behavior

    I know its picky but ....

    When a user "mouses' over" the grid search button, there is no change in the cursor, to indicate a hyperlink, nor is there a change in the state of the search button to indicate a hyperlink. I think this behavior is confusing some of my "slightly computer challenged users".

    Is there a way to change this ?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    RE: Grid Search Button Visible Behavior

    Yes, you can change the behavior with a few lines of Javascript. The issue is that the "Search" button is an input button, it's not a hyperlink, so the formatting rules applied to hyperlinks don't apply to the button.
    I'll give an example. My component is named "Header_grid". The search part of the component is an html form that Alpha Five automatically has named "Header_grid_Search", which also happens to be the same name that Alpha Five gives to the Search button on the grid.

    In the .a5w page that contains the component, I put this javascript:
    "head"

    "script type="text/javascript" language="javascript""
    function btnMouseOver(){
    this.style.color="red";
    }
    function btnMouseOut(){
    this.style.color="white";
    }

    function btnColor(){
    /* there are 2 objects named "Header_grid_search". One is a form and the other
    is the search button. We are interested in the search button.
    */
    var btnArray=document.getElementsByName("Header_grid_Search");
    var btn=btnArray[1]; // second element of array

    btn.onmouseover=btnMouseOver;
    btn.onmouseout=btnMouseOut;
    }

    window.onload=btnColor;
    "/script"
    "%a5
    Delete Tmpl
    DIM Tmpl as P
    tmpl = a5w_load_component("Header_grid")
    etc.

    Javascript is VERY picky about spelling and cases, so you have to type the cases of everything EXACTLY.
    The work is done by the btnColor function.
    The line
    btnArray=document.getElementsByName("Header_grid_Search")
    returns an array of everything named "Header_grid_Search". The first element of the array, or btnArray[0], is the html form, and the second element, btnArray[1], is the button we're interested in.
    The next line,
    var btn=btnArray[1]
    creates a variable, "btn", pointing to the Search button object on the html page.
    Next we modify the behavior of the button when a mouse goes over it and when a mouse leaves it by adding functions to the onMouseOver and onMouseOut events of the button.
    Finally, the line
    window.onload=btnColor;
    says that after the page loads, call the btnColor function, which sets up the event handlers for the Search button.

      RE: Grid Search Button Visible Behavior

      Peter,

      Thanks for your reply ... this does the trick.

      Funny though ... when I added the code through the A5 html editor I got a javascript error from Internet Explorer when I saved the file.

      "Undefined is null or not an object" and it references the line with the code:

      btn.onmouseover=btnMouseOver;

      When I actually publish and load the page it works great.

      I really appreciate your help and very clear instructions.

      My best,

      Bob

        To change the cursor I also added :

        this.style.cursor="pointer"; to function btnMouseOver()

        This accomplishes exactly what i wanted.

          Don't forget to set the cursor back to "default" in the onMouseOut event!
