Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Profile window text TOO LARGE

Come to think of it - there is ONE thing different from when I successfully used the trial version and now, attempting to use my purchased version...in between the two, I installed all the M$ Windows updates for XP.

I highly suspect the problem lies with one or more of their latest updates.

Aaron? Selwyn? Edward? Could this be?

    Thank you,
    Wanda

There should be an Alpha Five 6.0 folder in the Alpha Software folder in the registry. I mis-typed before when I wrote
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\alpha software
      it should be
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\alpha software\Alpha Five 6.0

and you should have LOTS of keys within that registry folder.

You're getting me excited, now...as there is only the one file in that folder...any suggestions?

        Thanks!

            Peter,
Only one file/key showing in the a5v6 folder, under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\alpha software

So, is this the problem? Where do I get the other keys I need? If you've followed this thread (plus I've had private emails with Edward, Lenny, and Aaron at Alpha - PLUS, Selwyn worked on it!) you'll see almost all of what I've tried.

            Thank you, Peter...
            Wanda

PS, I'm just about out of here and may not respond until tomorrow...

RE: Profile window text TOO LARGE

              Wanda,
I don't think that's the problem, but I'm puzzled. You should have lots of keys there -- they are keys created by Alpha Five as you create indexes, tables, set fonts, etc. In fact, if the program is registered, you should have an entry
              HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Alpha Software\Alpha Five 6.0\USER
to with keys for the registration number of the program.

If all else fails I suggest you completely remove the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Alpha Software entry tree from your registry and download and reinstall the trial version of 6.0. Keep a record of your registration number; you may need it again.

              - Peter

RE: Profile window text TOO LARGE

                Peter,
There are several folders (one being the \USER folder) under the Alpha Five 6.0 folder, each with one or more keys, but only one key in the Alpha Five 6.0 folder. I think we're on the same page, now. I was getting too technical on you, I think...or is should I say anal retentive?!

Eavan is working on the problem this morning...

                Thank you,
                Wanda

RE: Profile window text TOO LARGE

Geee...how do I say this without feeling guilty?

Our IT Manager installed a5v6 and the WAS onto my computer with his logon profile and guess what...everything works fine, now.

The problem apparently lies with my logon profile! If I knew anything about logon profiles, perhaps I would have known to check mine. I do have an excuse, though...I didn't set up my profile and don't have any experience with logon profiles. So - our IT department gets to fix it.

A huge thanks goes out to the Alpha Staff, as well as to those on this board who stood right beside me, offering many, many things to try to fix the problem!!! A huge thanks also goes to my IT Manager who had a hunch and went with it after I left lastnight, and found that it was, in fact, my profile causing the problem.

If it can be determined exactly what was causing the problem in my profile, I will post it.

                  Sincerely,
                  Wanda
