Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5 localhost slow is real world that slow

    Hi experts

Just went through "Dave's Trail Guide". That was very helpful.
I am finding that the demo I developed is very slow when I seek my web page by typing in http://localhost. (using the demo web server that comes with alpha 5)

Is the real world that slow?

My web page has lots of drop down boxes getting a dynamic list from other tables, maybe that is the problem?

    Your opinions are appreciated.

    Thanks

Localhost will be faster than the real world since you are not sending across the internet. The problem is probably the complexity of the page. Adding many dropdowns, or freeform regions, will really slow the building of the page. When you call the page over the internet, you then have to also consider the amount of data being sent. If you have long dropdowns, that is a lot of data to be sent as text. In testing, I have found that a dropdown of over 200 entries can get very slow to transmit.

The test the theory, build a second copy of any component, but leave out the dropdowns. See how fast that loads. Even a very basic component takes about .5 seconds to build, which isn't bad. But I have seen complex components with a number of dropdowns take over 5 seconds

The only answer I know of at this time for the speed issue is to build your page without components. I know this rather defeats the purpose of "building your app quickly and easily" but it does work.

HOWEVER, Selwyn demonstrated some improvements that will be in v7 which "preload" the data so that looking up subsequent pages is virtually instantaneous. I don't know if there will be any improvement in the initial load.

To get an idea of what is possible and IF YOU HAVE A CABLE/DSL connection (or if you want to wait a few minutes while dowloading 700K on a phone modem), you can try my test page here. I don't know how much longer that particular site will be available but it should be there for at least a few more days.

PLEASE DO NOT click the Prepare New Orders for Download button. It won't hurt anything but it will remove all "new/pending" orders from the site and users checking out the app won't be able to check out the "new orders" features until I reload them again. (Normal users [agents] checking out the system are not given the password to access the admin page.) If you do accidentally remove the new orders, please e-mail me so I can restore them.

Enter the admin password "trakitsp" then click the View All Status button. It should default to client C0001 which should load very fast since there are only 15 records. Once the initial load is complete, select "ALL" as the client name, make sure the Agent and Address fields are blank, and click the Re-Sort button. The resulting page will have a size of 700K and include 9000 records. There will be 5200 orders displayed and the other 3800 records are in the drop-downs - mostly the agent list.

On my system with a cable modem it takes about 15 seconds to load the page. This is pretty consistent with any 700K download.

You may notice that I originally had the page set up to display records in groups but I have since removed that option. My users didn't like it - they wanted to see everything at once. (The buttons are still there because I'm expecting someone to come crying, "I want it back!") Of course, viewing "All" with no agent or address selected won't be normal but it might happen. However, "All" for a specific agent or street name, or part of a street name, will be common.

I'm really pleased with the perfromance I'm getting out of my A5 web app. I've now got over 7500 images referenced and the lookup times are very impressive. I am also populating drop down search boxes from fields in one of the tables and again, the performance is really fast.

You can check out the search performance using Rider # 770 or 771 which are both of my boys. As such, there are more photos of them than any other rider. Also try drilling down by date.

FYI all of the search fields are indexed.

          My app is at http://www.mxpix.com.

Make sure you've got enough memory and a fast machine for this type of development. My server is a 3Ghz P4 with 512MB of RAM, it's tied to a full T1. My development machine is a 2Ghz P4 with 1GB of RAM.
