Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

port confusion re an IIS Server

    Hey everyone,

I'm ready to take the plunge and begin learning/designing with the WAS. Port 80 is used by our IIS server, and IT wants to see if we can use Port 81. If that is successful, will the WAS be accessible (for designing) by several computers who are authorized to access Port 81?

A secondary question is, once I have a database designed for the WAS, will the users need to physically type in "81" in the internet address of each application (be it Alpha, Access, Sql, whatever) every time they need to view or work with the data?

Internet/Intranet configurations are completely foreign, so please excuse the ignorance of even how this question is worded.

    Thanks!

RE: port confusion re an IIS Server

You have a few different questions here, let's see if I can address them all

    - Yes, you can run the Web App Server on any port you wish, as long as it is not already in use by some other program.

    - I'm not sure what you mean by available "for designing" by several computers. You do not do the design work on the server, you build your application in Alpha Five and then publish it to the server. Publishing in your case will just be a file copy across your LAN, so your IT department will be able to set up the file permissions to allow access to whoever needs it.

As far as actually testing or using the application, the server will need to have a Web Application Server license installed and activated in order to allow access to web browsers not running on the server itself.

    - If you use any port other than 80, users will in fact need to append that port to the URL that they use to access your applications. If the Web App Server is running on port 81 and the server's name is "server", your URL would be http://server:81

RE: port confusion re an IIS Server

      Hi Lenny,
Thank you for responding so quickly. I just tried to activate v6 and can't until I get internet access on that pc.

So, I have all the design tools on the computers (we bought 3 copies) that I install v6 on, right? When I (or another designer) am ready to publish an application, then configuring the WAS will need to be done on the server where the WAS license is installed and activated?

RE appending port "81" to the URL, if a v6 application for the WAS is accessed by users via a link on our website, would the "81" need to be "hard coded" so that the users wouldn't need to physically type it into the internet address?

RE: port confusion re an IIS Server

You can publish from your workstations to the server before the license is activated. As I mentioned above, publishing is essentially just copying files across the network. Of course you won't be able to actuially test the app on the server without a license unless you go over to the server and use a web browser on it. But you can publish your app locally on your development system and test it without a license.

If you have a hyperlink on your website to http://server:81, it will take the user to the correct site and at that point there is nothing for them to type anywhere as far as URLs.

Cool, Lenny. Thanks. This is good news and I just might be understanding it enough to be dangerous!
