Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    page not found

I've created a simple grid, uploaded it via alpha ftp and can see the file when the directory is viewed in FTP.

The server is installed and running (on port81) and the licence has been activated.

Yet when I call a page I get the generic "Page cannot be found"

I find html files in the same directory.

The only thing I'm not sure of is the alias box in the web profile what does this path signify?

    Any help appreciated

    thanks

    RE: page not found

    Hi Ian,

Have you created an A5 web page and placed the grid component on the page?

You will need to create the component and then create an *.a5w page. The *.a5w page will contain the grid. Then upload both the grid and the *.a5w page to your server. From there you should be albe to use your web browser to navigate to the *.a5w page.

Also since you are using port 81 you may have to specify the port in the URL or your browser.

      RE: page not found

      Hi

yes I've done that and had another alpha user do a separate page, both work locally but neither "on line"

As to port 81 there doesn't seem to be a lot of information about its' use.

      if my pa
page is as www.12345.co.uk/grid.a5w will this work with port 81?

      thanks

        Hi Ian,

        Try www.12345.co.uk/grid.a5w:81

        See if that works.

            Hi Ian,

Went to your site. One thing I noticed is that you have IIS services running. This may cause some problems. Make sure the IIS is not using port 81. You may need to look at IIS web site setup.

On your local machine does everything work as desired?

The other items to check - is the questionaire.a5w page in the same folder as the index.html page? Is the spelling correct (Capital letters vs non)? Does any *.a5w page display on your web site?

            Just some other thoughts.

              Hi Dan

              thanks for the suggestions

No a5w page runs on the site and in fact Keith Hubert has been using another domain on my server to get is own application to run.

As for iis services running I'll check but if I select port 80 then was refuses to start and tells me of a conflict whereras if I select port 81 then it loads and runs and the staus window tells me was is running.

I have installed a full copy of alpha5v6 with the latest update, it's not activated but according to the forum it doesn't need to be.

The document root on the remote server is set to C:\A5Webroot

I have looked at the log files and the server does appear to be functioning as I see the log below

Perhaps I should send the logs to Alpha in the hope that they can throw some light on the problem
              ?

              cheers

                Hi Ian,

You are probably going to need some help from Lenny.

                I went to http://www.licensedstocktaker.co.uk:81/questionaire.a5w

and got the Alpha Five Web Application 404 error. So that says that the A5 web server is at least running.

                  Hi (again)

I got the blue "a" in the url so your server is up and running.

It just can't find your questionaire.a5w page. I would guess that you just need to get that page put in the proper folder and then it would display.

To see the error go to
                  http://www.licensedstocktaker.co.uk:81/questionaire.a5w

                    RE: page not found

Thanks for all the help, hopefully Lenny will pick up on this string and profer some help.

I just gotta know what is the "blue a" in the URL

I've looked and can't see a blue a although I do get an Alpha generated error.

I see what you say the file upload location is correct.

However the file is in the HTdocs directory where the index.html page is located so the question arises that I need to know ewhere the server thinks it can locate questionaire.a5w is this set up in the upload profile?

                    Cheers

                          Interesting! I just went to
                          http://www.licensedstocktaker.co.uk:81/

                          and got Keilth's page.

Basically you just need to set up folders. You may need to set up a virtual drive. One for you and one for Keith.

I don't know how to set up more than one person's hosting on the WAS Server. That will probably be a question for someone with a little more knowledge.

That icon is called a "favicon", short for "favorites icon". It is used by some browsers in your bookmarks and in the address bar. Mozilla also places the icon on its tabs if you use them.

You can replace this icon if you'd like by simply creating your own favicon.ico file and putting it in your web root. If you do not have one and a user's browser requests one, the Web Application Server sends the built-in version you are seeing instead of an error.

If you'd like details on creating your own favicon, a search with your favorite web search engine will reveal several techniques and tools that can be used.
