Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Question for Selwyn or Lenny Ref. V7

There was some talk about this some time ago, and I'm just wondering if the upcoming Version 7 will include the following features for the WAS:

    1. Auto-Fill Capability. Allows a drop-down value to populate other fields automatically.

    2. Drop-Down w/User Entry Option. Allows a person to select from a list of drop-down values, or enter data directly into the field.

Presently these two features are available on the desktop application, but not on the WAS, and are badly needed.

Also, when is Version 7 scheduled to roll out?

""" Yes. This will be in V7.

    2. Drop-Down w/User Entry Option. Allows a person to select from a list of drop-down values, or enter data directly into the field.

""" If I understand the question correctly, this is a current capability of V6.

#2 is not possible and will not be added. This is a limitation of web browser, they do not have a combo box control, just a drop-down

Okay then let me ask you this about V7. Suppose I had a web form that asked for a person's Name, Address, Phone No, etc., and all of the fields were FILL IN. (No drop downs)

But I want the user to have the option of filling in those fields from a list of previous names & addresses. Could I create a SEPARATE drop down field that would populate those other fields?

This would somewhat solve the problem of a field not being able to be both a Fill In/Drop Down Field at the same time.

        Is this possible?

... and if it is, and the user uses the drop-down to fill the fields with previous values, would he still be able to modify one of the fields? In other words, if drop-down populated the fields with the person's name, address & phone number, but his phone number had since changed, would he still be able to overwrite the populated "Phone No" field and enter the new info??

RE: Question for Selwyn or Lenny Ref. V7

          this feature IS in V7.

the feature that will do what you want it called a lookup field.

the lookup field looks like a regular text entry field, but it has a little icon to the right of it. when the user click the icon, a new browser window opens showing a grid component. the user selects a row in this pop up window and that causes the pop up window to close and then fill in as many fields in the parent grid as the developer designated to fill in.

so, you might have a customerid, firstname and lastname fields.

the customerid field might be designated as a lookup field. when the user makes a selection, the customerid, firstname and lastname are all filled in.

it is very much the the lookup fielrule in a5 desktop applications.

Sounds like that will "fit the bill!"

            Now the question is ........

When will we see this new V7??????

RE: Question for Selwyn or Lenny Ref. V7

you can see it right now if you want to start using V7 beta functionality that is already in V6.

however, if use the V7 beta functionality, you are commiting yourself to eventually upgrading to V7 because the component will only be editable in V7 once the beta period expires.

having said, that, to open the V7 grid builder, go to the Interactive window and type

              addin.run("a5_wcb2")

you will notice that textbox fields have a property called "lookup". if you check this, a series of properties get revealed that allow you to define the lookup.

That sounds great. Now let me ask a question that a lot of folks are probably wondering ......

You just had a special sale on additional licenses of V6 at $99.00, with a FREE upgrade to V7. (Ended June 30th)

Just before you started the special for $99.00, I purchased two additional licenses for $349.00. (Guess I shoulda' waited, huh?)

Anyway, since you were offering a free upgrade for the $99.00 purchasers, will those of us who paid MORE, still get the free upgrade?

you would have to contact Brett Johnston ([email protected]).

answer is probably yes, but it would obviously depend on when you purchased v6.

every time we do an upgrade all purchases that happen within a window of one or two months before the new version comes out typically are eligible for a free upgrade.

RE: Question for Selwyn or Lenny Ref. V7

This is going to be a great addition, but I have a problem that I can't seem to get around. The grid component can't dynamically set default values in fields or dynamically filter without being in a gridlinker, on a A5w page or in the detail of of a parent child relationship (to add default values).

Since this only allows grids and not gridlinkers, there is no way to dynamically filter or add field defaults, unless the grid component will have this as an added feature in V7. Any thoughts?

I can't seem to get the V7 beta addin to work. I went to the Grid Builder and typed in the addin command. After hitting the "enter" button, this is what I get:

                      addin.runaddin.run("a5_wcb2")
                      ERROR: addin not found.

I have the most recent patch, and my current version is
                      Build 1600, 2056.

                      Am I doing something wrong?

Disregard. I rebooted the system and tried it again, and now it works, however I can't seem to apply the V7 functions to existing grids, only new ones. Is there something I need to do to apply it universally?

                          the command is

                          addin.run("a5_wcb2")

                          NOT

                          addin.runaddin.run("a5_wcb2")

to apply the v7 to an existing grid:

                          1. run
                          addin.run("a5_wcb2")

                          2. that opens an blank grid builder.

                          3. click the Open button to load an existing grid into the grid builder.

I am trying out the lookup capability that will be featured in V7. I can create grids but when I go back and make certain changes the lookup prpoerty tab is no where to be found. Is there something I need to be aware of. At the moment I am re-creating grids from scratch because I don't have the ability to edit with the lookup function. Thanks,
