Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    CSS at alpha5host

I was beta testing my program at alpha5host and I must say it is like walking in a dark room you have never been in before.
    What I mean is this:
1: My stylesheets are gone. I saw them publish (To where?)using the profile as I had been told to set it up.
2: I had to move all my images from their subdirectory (/images)and reset all the refrences in my pages to see them.
3: I have several functions in my pages that open .dbf files. They work in local but not on the at alpha5host.
What I am driving at is that I feel like the profile function is a "Black Box" you stuff settings into it as you are told and you hope that the files land in the right place when you publish.
Can someond help iluminate this process?

    Jesse:

I took advantage of some beta testing at the alpha5host site and had the same problem with the CSS files. They published but when the application ran they never kicked in. The site never had an adequate response as to why. The rest of my application ran fine though.

John I got it working. Everything that was was not working.
I used Core FTP. The CSS folders were there but they were empty. Once I copied the Style info into them from my home computer... Bang... everything worked. I thank you for help.

This problem is in the publishing routine, it is not specific to Alpha5host. We are looking into the exact cause and hope to have this fixed soon.

            Thanks for the honesty Lenny.
You programers at Alpha 5 plan big and have delivered big.
The FTP problems are minor compared with what good things your programs doing.
DTW I demonstrated my site for my staff and boss and they were impressed. I owe most of that to your program. I couldn't have done half of what I did without A5!

FYI - I reported this CSS issue months ago with ample proof and had a frustrating time getting it acknowledged as an error. I'm glad to see you are seeing it that way now.

                RE: CSS at alpha5host

I'm sorry for the frustration Steve. We could not duplicate the problem at the time. As it turns out, it is specific to the way our FTP publishing interacts with the way Alpha5hosts's FTP server is configured. It works properly with other FTP servers we tested against, so we missed the cause before.

The specific problem is that our FTP upload uses the command "cd /" to get back the FTP root. It then cd's to the CSS folder to upload. But on Alpha5host's server, "cd /" is not valid. As a result, the CSS and Javascript files would end up in the wrong folder.

Our next patch will enhance the FTP upload to decide whether it needs to do "cd /" or "cd ~" to get back to the root. We've tested this against Alpha5host's server as well as several others and it works properly.

Alpha5host is also looking into changing the configuration of their FTP server to allow "cd /" to work. This may not be possible, but if it is, it will get everyone back in business even before we release the patch.

                  RE: CSS at alpha5host

All the CSS files are uploaded, just to the wrong directory. They are uploaded to the htdocs directory instead of being uploaded to the CSS and Javascript directories just below the htdocs directory. If you manually create the folders and move the appropriate files to them, all works properly. But you are right; uploading by profile does not work properly with CSS files.

Howard, are you also uploading to Alpha5host or some other server?

                          A Cascading Style Sheet

simply it is the file or set of files which contain the formatting detail for your web pages. They are "referenced" in your web pages to set the style and look of the pages. So if you change some part of the formatting in the css file it will populate across any page that uses that particular format.

Its not just FTP, its the same issue for LAN. I've had new users call ME and report the same problem. I think Howard continues this discussion below.
