Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5page vs Html page

Is there any reason for using just the html page in the web design versus a5 page. Since you can insert html in the a5 page along with the html, why should you even use html page. Is there a difference in the speed of loading or something else.
I am designing an extensive website and wanted to know if anybody new the pros and cons of the two pages.
    Thanks

if the page you are serving does not have any xbasic in it then it makes no difference if the page is a .a5w or .html page.

however, if the page has dynamic content generated by xbasic, then it has to be a .a5w page.

I may not have made my question clear.
I know the a5 code has to be in the a5 pages.
But what I was asking is why do you need the html pages.
Even if you don't have any a5 code on a page, why not just use the a5 pages anyway.
Is there any advantage to using the html page.

        Barron

The first advantage that I see is that it is a page that may already exist and needs to be in html only code for other reasons - ie shared with a system that doesn't have the Alpha server available.

The next is I don't have to look within a page to know if there is an Alpha code in it. If I make it an html, it doesn't have any.

Have you found that this causes a problem other than confusion on its intent?

I think what Barron is asking is whether the WAS is smart enough to see that a page has an html extension and just send it up without scanning the content for xbasic code. I don't know the answer, but even if it might save a tiny bit of time it's probably not significant.

            RE: A5page vs Html page

If your page has an .A5W extension, the web app server will load it into memory, review it for Xbasic code andf execute anything it finds. This is true even if there is no actual Xbasic code in there.

By using the .HTML extension (or any other extension besides .A5W), this evalutaion is not done. Instead, the file is streamed directly fromt he server to the browser.

While the overhead of opening and parsing the file is not great, it does exist. If you want to optimize your application for performance, you should only use the .A5W extension for pages that contain Xbasic code.

              Barron,

One advantage to using HTML pages that I have personally noticed is that they seem to load faster.

              Try this...

              Create an HTML Page
              Create an identical a5W page

Load each page and watch your watch. I think you will notice the difference.

                Thanks everyone for the info.
I thought that maybe the html would load a little faster, wasn't sure though. Thanks for confirming the difference between the two.

                  RE: A5page vs Html page

                  Barron,

Also, when creating an HTML page, it is quite possible to create a page that displays as you want, but is not coded as well as it could/should be, therefore the browser takes longer to render it.

One example is using a graphic and not specifying the height and width attributes, which takes longer to load becasue the browser has to download everything before it can determine the placement of the content.

A second example is using one large table rather than multiple small tables, causing slower browser rendering.

Unnecessary code also cause slower loading and rendering.
