ASP to A5w #2

I am opening a dataset directly and getting a pointer to a recordset. That works fine. I just want to make sure there is not a shorter syntax for getting a field value in WAS as I have quite a number of statements to change as I move from asp to was.

rs("SIGTarget") - asp syntax
? rs.fields.item("SIGTarget").value - was syntax

That's correct Bill, you will need to convert the ASP syntax.

You can use either
rs.fields.item("SIGTarget").value
or
rs.fields.item("SIGTarget")
in Xbasic.

Good. Not requiring the ".value" on the end makes it easier to do a global search replace.

you can speed up ADO considerably by pre-resolving objects.

for example:

say you have this code
rs.fields.item("field1")
rs.fields.item("field2")
rs.fields.item("field3")

if you did this, it would be faster:

dim fld as p
fld = rs.fields
fld.item("field1")
fld.item("field2")
fld.item("field3")

Selwyn -- In a similar vein, would it be faster to populate dialog variables with something like this?:

dim vars as p
dim t as p
t = table.open("mytable")
' fetch appropriate record here
t.record_to_vars(vars)

v_CustomerID = vars.CustomerID
v_Customer_Lastname = vars.Lastname
...
t.close()

no, it would make no difference.

you are not reducing the number of levels (i.e. dots) in the variable that a5 has to evaluate

I set up a timer on the two operations. One assigned variable values from the var.dotvariables

e.g.

var1 = var.field1
var2 = var.field2
etc.

and the other assigned the variable values directly from the table fields

e.g.

var1 = t.field1
var2 = t.field2
etc.

The second method was three times faster than the first. But in the end, they are both so fast that it hardly matters, and the alternative approach gains nothing but a couple of extra lines and possibly some coding confusion.
