Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    WAS and Images

    Hi Guys
In my Alpha app. I pass a variable to an external prog.
which then displays the required image.
This enables certain image manipulation ie. email or print
all or part of the image, in most cases tif G4 format is used.
I realise that displaying BMP or Jpeg formats using WAS is relatively easy, but that is not what I want to achieve.
I've tried sys_shell but I get an error message saying it's
    not supported by WAS.
It's important that a user can type a ref no. held in an Alpha dbf and then press a button and then be transported to an external program.
Have any of you guys know if this is achieveable.
    Any help appreciated.
    Regards
    Barry

    RE: WAS and Images

Can you clarify the question a bit? Exactly what are you doing with the external program? It sounds to me like you are assuming the WAS has the same image limitations as the desktop version of A5 but the WAS can display any image type supported by HTML because HTML is what is being presented to the user.

Of course, displaying the images is done differently because of the HTML.

I also don't understand how you are going to start an external program from within the browser but maybe that's just my own ignorance.

      RE: WAS and Images

      Hi Cal

I think it's my ignorance. I appteciate I can display jpeg
images through a Web browser, I've managed to get that far
however having done that all I've got is an image with no manipulation.
I was hoping that once I was on the web I could invoke another program, if thats the right terminology, to carry out the image manipulation.
On Alpha's Web app. sample there is an example showing Flowers but once they are displayed you can't for instance print part of an image.
My company already has a Document management product but unfortunately it is not enabled for use on the Web.
I was hoping that I could use Alpha as a front end and then some other means to view the images.
      Rambled on a bit
      Regards
      Barry

        Barry,

I am with Cal and still confused on exactly what you are trying to do? Maybe you can give us some examples? Exactly how do you want to 'manipulate' the image once it is displayed in the browser?

Without really understanding what you are trying to achieve, since you have a third party program that will manipulate the images for you, why can't you display the image in the browser and then use the standard browser right click and save as image to your local pc ... then open your 3rd party program and manipulate away?

Sorry if that is not the answer you are looking for, but I really do not fully understand what you are trying to accomplish.

        Good luck

You need to think in browser based terms. To change how an image is manipulated through the browse, you'll need to deal with the computer that is running the browse and displaying the data.

Sys_shell is a server based option that can be used on the machine that is running Alpha 5, but not the machine that is running the browser.

To change how an image is display and opened to edit, you'll need to tell the browse what to do. You may need to run some java script to open the image with the program that is associated with that particular image type.

Or as someone else mentioned, use a right click on the image to open it with a program on the client based system. (It's java that will automate that for you.)
