Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Very slow a5w pages still?

Would anyone mind visiting my database pages and telling me if the slow performance is typical for what I am trying to do.
    http://performance.hpl.ecu.edu:81/Subject_Db/Subjectswww/Subdb_Edit.A5w

Particularly, on the page with the Read Only grid component and Editable detailed view. One clicks on the Contact ID in the grid to bring up the detailed view for editing. It rarely occurs that the detail view is populated in 10 sec and some times it never occurs but most of the time it takes 2 5 minutes.

I will send the database and web project to anyone that thinks they know what I have done wrong. This is a work in progress and has no fluff what so ever.

The Username is guest and pw is also guest. By the way, the 4 records in the database are fake.

    Thanks,

    Chuck

It took 25 seconds to load for me.

Which V6 template did you use for the login layout. I like the look?

      Chuck,

It took less than 30 seconds for me also.

If you want to zip it up and email it to me, I'll look at it, but there is nothing obvious on the form that I can see.

It seems to be acting oddly to me. In Firefox it takes 4-5 minutes to load the detail. In IE, it either doesn't show any detail at all when I click or it simply takes about 15 seconds or so. Something seems to be up, but I don't know what.

25-30 seconds is not what I would call acceptable. When a record to update is identified and clicked I would give up before waiting that long each time. Could take 5 minutes to update only one field in 10 records at that rate.

I could not tell by your responses if this seemed normal to you or not?

          Thanks for your time.

That is exactly the way it acts with me as well. I must have screwed something up.

            Thanks for your time...

By the way. When i test it in Preview mode in the grid builder it populates the detailed view within 5 sec.

When I preview the a5w page locally it is slow. So it seems the componet it self is ok but its integration on an a5w page is screwing it up.

                    Chuck,

In the AfterValidate event of your login dialog component, you are doing a redirect to "index.a5w". But, when I unzipped your database, there was no such page.

                    Try changing that to "subdb_edit.a5w"

Also, you may want to assign the session variable for is logged in prior to the redirect.

RE: Very slow a5w pages still?

It takes about 10 secs for me to see a detail after I click on detail view, which is not unreasonable, I think. You are showing a tremendous amount of detail in the grid view, though, and I wonder if that is slowing you down. Remember, A5 has to generate code for each column that you show in a grid. Your page would probably load a lot faster if you minimized the number of fields in the read-only grid, and showed them only in the detail view. Your page will also generate faster, I think, if you don't use all of the options that the grid provides on each field. Do you have to be able to sort, for example, on the insulin dose? On the "Currently exercising" field? On the "description of exercise" field? Do you have to show those fields in the grid view?
Why don't you see what happens if you limit the read-only grid to contact ID and the name fields, and limit sorting to the last name field and the contact ID field. You might see a big improvement in the speed of loading the page. Then you can decide which fields you absolutely have to include in the read-only grid, and add back just those.
