Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Newbie Questions

    Hello all,

I am new to this forum, and I have used Alphasoftware products in the past with much success.

I have one or 2 questions regarding the web server software and hopefully you may be able to answer it.

I have been doing web development for several years with languages such as Coldfusion, ASP and Tango. All of the configurations that I have used use IIS as the Web server component.

    A5 appears to be very different, and as such I have a few questions;

1: IIS allows you to host multiple websites to either a single IP or multiple IP. When using a single IP IIS determines which which is the proper domain via Host Headers, does A5's web server have the same functionality.

2: Whether people agree or disagree, IIS is fairly robust, and can services thousands of concurrent requests. Are there any similars benchmark for the A5 webserver?

3: What are the limitations of the A5 webserver

Any information would be much appreciated,

    Thanks in advance,

    Jeff Goldstein

    RE: Newbie Questions

    Jeff:

Alpha WAS does not directly support multi-homing (use one IP for several websites). You will need to set-up Apache as proxy server that redirects the requests directly to Alpha Was. This architecture seems to work just fine, as we are using it on your www.alpha5host.com several domains.

Currently, there are no benchmarks that I know of...part of our bets test period is to test and see how well the WAS can handle traffic. To date, we have not seen any issues provided that server configuration is to current standards.

BTW, using the Apache configuration will also allow for WAS server balancing among different servers.

I too come from the CF, ASP world...one thing I have noticed is that you can develope your app much quicker if you can use the component Grids and Dialogs.

    It worth a closer look.

      RE: Newbie Questions

      John,

Thank you very much for the reply. I know that I need a RAD tool if you will for doing development.

There have been several pieces of software that I want to evaluate such as CodeCharge, which is basically just a code generator, but it has some very nice features. Design for CF, then click a button and the code is "genned" for ASP or PHP or ASP.NET. and many others, however I really dont feel very comfortable with their methodology.

I have always like Alpha products. I guess I have to play with it for a while..

      Thanks again,

      Jeff

        RE: Newbie Questions

        Jeff:
The key concept here with the Alpha WAS is "Productivity in Programming". Alpha has taken some of those most mundane time-consuming tasks and basically turned them into property setting activities. Some of my favorites are:

        1. Ability to filter and/or sort a data grid by passing a filter and/or sort in the URL
        2. Automatic Select generation from table or static list
        3. PDF report generation and delivery with 2 lines of code from an existing report
        4. Alpha's rich xbasic functionality set saves having to write my own functions for common tasks
        5. FTP and Email functionality built-in and easy to use
        6. Easy deployment of web application

Some things I am looking for:
        1. File Upload ability
        2. Grid Events (which I think are coming in the next release)
        3. Ability to call a script from an a5w page vs. copying the code into a a5w page
        4. And reaching for the Holy Grail of web development...being able to de-bug a5w code in a debugger!
