Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Posting rules

I'm not able to make the posting rules work when I change a record through the WAS.

Is that because I'm doing something wrong or because that functionality should not work when data are entered through the WAS??

    Regards
    Dannie

    RE: Posting rules

the posting rules work only work when data entry is done through the a5 user interface.

the WebAppServer does not go through the user interface.

      Selwyn,

Is there a work around to this?? I have the same problem, but I need to update team baseball scores via the web. My application works great when enter data in the database manually, but when I enter data via the WSA the information is not posted. (Even if I go to the table and save it).

Is there an external script I can run that will update the information throught the correct interface??

Thanks in advance for your help,

      Tim

You can write your own xbasic script to do it but it will be unique to each situation.

Since I haven't used the web components much (somehow I've ended up with projects that didn't lend themselves to web components), I can't help much with how to interface the xbasic with your existing components. I'm sure somebody else here can.

          Cal is correct.

I use the posting feature but not as a rule. It is coded with xbasic and usually placed in one of the event sections on the components. Try this. Create a post operation for your app using the script genie. CHeck out the xbasic code that is produced. Thhis code can be quickly modiefied for use with the WAS. Remove all code references to the user interface which will not operate with the WAS and make sure when you reference tables in this code you use the path alias.

If you are using a dialogue component. this code could be placed in the before or after validate event sections. If you are using a grid component V7 has a nice selection of events that can be programmed. If you are running V6 you will have to place the code within the a5 page. Hope this helps.

Steve and Cal, thanks for your help. That corrected the problem. I had tried to use the xbasic code before, but I did not remove the user interface commands. Once I did that, the system worked correctly.

            Thanks for all the information,

            Tim
