Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Accepted File Types

    Hello,

This is probably a question most have already figured out, but I guess there is no harm in asking.

Are .a5w, .html, and .a5wcmp the only file types supporeted by Alpha WAS?

I would like to try and include some .php pages in my project, is this possible?

    Thanks as always,

    Sarah Mengesha

    RE: Accepted File Types

The Web Application Server can serve any file type. However it will only execute A5W pages. If you were to server PHP pages, the unevaluated source of your pages would be sent to the user's browser.

So are you saying there is no way to configure php pages to be executable on the Alpha WAS?

          Lenny,

Is it possible to install the php module to the web server?

          Thanks

            Lenny,
At the risk of being presumptuous, I think you're wrong. With the Apache module, Apache can be configured to service php pages and to send .a5w pages to the WAS. As long as php code isn't mixed with a5w code in the same page, it should be possible to mix a5w pages with php pages on the same web site.

Have you tried this Peter? Can you elaborate a little on how this would be done? I am not very familiar with Apache but which would be the primary server in this situation, Apache or Alpha? Would this be very complicated to set up?

              Thanks,

                RE: Accepted File Types

While you are correct Peter, the Apache module is not generally available. In this configuration the Web Application Server is still not processing any PHP, those requests would be handled by Apache.

If you'd like to mix Xbasic and PHP (or ASP, Coldfusion, Perl, etc), you really don't even need the Apache module. You can run The Web App Server and IIS or Apache and send the requests for the relevant server using port numbers on your hyperlinks.

But the answer to "So are you saying there is no way to configure php pages to be executable on the Alpha WAS" is still correct - the Web App Server cannot execute the PHP

The server does not support external exucutables or CGI programs.

                    Sarah,
Lenny is certainly correct that the WAS cannot execute php pages. He is also correct in that you don't need the Apache module to include php pages in your project. What you can do, for example, is set up Apache to listen on port 80, and WAS to listen on port 81. Then if you have, say, a link to an .a5w page, you would set up the link as

                    "a href="/MyA5wPage.a5w:81""Alpha Goodies"/a"

and links to php pages would be set up as
                    "a href="/MyPHPPage.php:80""php Goodies"/a"

Whatever code you would use for response.redirect() in php pages and A5w pages would also have to know what server (Apache or WAS) to use. Either server could execute regular html pages; Apache will probably do them faster.

                      Re: Accepted File Types

Just wanted to be clear. If I have a website with mostly htm or html pages, along with a few a5w pages, of course, I can serve it with just WAS? I do not need Microsoft WebServer? This is great news! Can someone please verify this for me?

                      Thank you.
