Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Web App Server-only version now available

The Web App Server-only version of Alpha Five is now available. It is freely available to any Alpha Five user.

This version does not require an Alpha Five license number, however it does need a Web Application Server license if you want it to accept non-local connections. Without a Web App Server license, it will only accept local connections which allows it to still be used for testing.

RE: Web App Server-only version now available

    Lenny,

I read quite a long exchange on another portion of the forums about this software and I'm sure you are very tired of discussing it, but for my clarification, would you mind if I ask you one more question?

If I'm looking at this correctly, this database serving software is something I, as a developer, can purchase and consider a "cost of doing business" item. I can also use this server software to host databases for several different clients. I can possibly make back the cost of the software by charging my clients a monthly fee to host their data.

Am I correct in the above assumptions?

Yes Greg, you would be able to host sites for customers and charge a monthly fee.

Thanks for the clarification Lenny. Is the cost ($699.00)a "one time" thing?

        Thanks again,
        Greg

yes, $699 allows you to serve applications to an unlimited number of users from a single server. This license is not subscription based and does not expire.

How does this independent version link with Version 5. It seems to be standalone and not connected to work as in Version 6.

It is basically a special V6 runtime that cannot open a database. You can install it on the same computer as V5, V6 or any other version of Alpha Five.

Does this mean it will only accept connections From the SAME MACHINE IT IS RUNNING ON, or will it accept a connection across the office network, such as FROM a linux client?

                Thanks,
                Dave

It will only accept connections from the "Local Host", which is the same machine the WAS server is running on.

It will not accept connection from any other machine on your network or on the internet.

                    From the same machine only.

If you need to test from a Linux client before purchasing a license, you should contact Brett Johnston at 781-229-4500. He may be able to help you.

I can tell you however that the user experince is exactly the same no matter the opearting system of the client. The web components are 100% standard HTML and do not use ActiveX or anything else that would be platform-specific.

Is running the 'server-only' version the same as running A5v6 and starting the WAS without opening a database?

Existing Alpha5 Web Server on "localhost"

Will I be able to install this "localhost" server over the server I have already installed when I bought the bundle or do I have to un-install the current server? It's still in the 30 trial mode as I have installed it on my LAN server with the actual license.

                            Thanx
