Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid component

    Does anyone know whether it is possible to change the filter for a dropdownbox, so that the filter is based on a value in a session variable?

    When you place a component on a page, you have an option to override values. If you look at the xbasic in the component using a dynamic list, you should find lines something like this

    with tmpl.field_info[1]
    .Fieldname = "Name"
    .Scope = "Local"
    .DisplayFormat = ""
    .DisplayUnFormat = ""
    .Type = "C"
    .Controltype = "DropDownBox"
    .DropdownBox.InLineStyle = ""
    .DropdownBox.Type = "Dynamic"
    .DropdownBox.StyleFieldIfError = .t.
    .DropdownBox.ErrorInLineStyle = ""
    .DropdownBox.Size = 1
    .DropdownBox.selectStyle = "Single"
    .DropdownBox.NotInListRule = "Add To List"
    .DropDownBox.Datasource = "DBF-Table"
    .DropDownBox.Table = "[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\Programs.Dbf"
    .DropDownBox.DisplayValueField = "Name"
    .DropDownBox.StoredValueField = ""
    .DropDownBox.maxchoices = 0
    .DropDownBox.Filter = "Region_Id=\"10\""

    Form this, you can override the dropdown filter by using something like this on the page after the component loads and before it runs

    regionid = "10"

    tmpl.field_info[1].DropDownBox.Filter = "Region_Id=\""+regionid+"\""

    Of course, you expression will be different and you can replace the regionid in the example with a session variable.

      Thanks Jerry

      Can the same procedure be used for a primary key?

      I want to have the primary key in a child table to be the value of a session variable.

        You can override any parameter that is set with the xbasic code. In one case, I use a component that was designed for one table and change the DBF table definition to use another table that has the field field names.

          Jerry -

          I have a similar issue/need. Upon login, I am creating session variables that I use to filter the subsequent A5W pages. This works fine. I now want to pass the session variable into the grid itself and filter a specific dropdown based on the session variable.

          No matter what I try I am unable to get this to work, however, if I hardcode the filter such as contclientid=8 it works and filters on id number 8

          Is there a way to pass the session variable into the grid for filtering?

            Just use the methoid I listed above, substituting the session variable for the value. In the example, I used

            regionid = "10"

            tmpl.field_info[1].DropDownBox.Filter = "Region_Id=\""+regionid+"\""

            If you had a session variable named session.region, the code would become

            tmpl.field_info[1].DropDownBox.Filter = "Region_Id=\""+session.region+"\""

            However, your example shows the filter using a numeric value so the session variable has to be numeric. The code without a variable would be something like

            tmpl.field_info[1].DropDownBox.Filter = "contclientid=8"

            Using a numeric variable, the code would be something like

            tmpl.field_info[1].DropDownBox.Filter = "contclientid="+session.id

              Jerry -

              Thanks for the reply, but its still not working.. Here's what I am doing:

              When the user logs in I lookup the login and create a variable called memid. this is a Character based value. I store this value as session.__protected__memid and also copy it to session.varclient.

              When I embed them into an a5w page and type ?session.varclient the correct value is displayed, so I know the variable exists, and its correct.

              I now want to put this variable into the drop down box and filter the field that is displayed (from the contact table) on the id field called contclientid (which is NUMERIC) with the Char based value that is the variable.

              I have tried the following filter values to no avail...

              "Contclientid="+val(session.varclient)
              "conclientid="+session.varclient
              contclientid=8 THIS WORKS BUT ITS HARDCODED
              contclientid=val(session.varclient)
              contclientid=+val(session.varclient)
              contclientid=+session.varclient

              Also what does \"" and "\"" send to the server?

              Thanks in advance.

                I used the following code in a dialog component, Issueid is an numeric value.
                ---------------------------------------------
                session.uid = 50
                '
                'Component code here
                '
                '
                tmpl.Variable_Info[1].DropDownBox.Filter = "Issueid"" + Session.uid
                ----------------------------------------------
                and it worked

                re:Also what does \"" and "\"" send to the server?
                These are escape characters and enclose the value with quotes
