Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Auto Refresh for browser client?

    Hi,

Been a A5 developer for 2 years now and i believe A5v6 is answers to many of my customer's prayers. Particularly now, i'm in the process of building a prototype app that will be used on a dial-up WAN where-in the HQ will be running the app using A5v6 runtime, whist the branches will monitor the app using a web browser connected via dial-up.

My question is: is there a way that will auto-refresh the browser that opens a table grid to check for any new data posted into it? since the branch monitoring is critical, the refresh will need to happen at least every 2 minutes - automagically, without the need for the user to refresh the browser.

I know this is possible via the A5 client, but i can't seem to find how to do this for the browser client.

Finally, Is it possible to use the A5v6 runtime client across the internet without windows sharing?

    many thanks to all

    Carlo M.

You can place some Javascript on your A5W page(s) that will refresh the page from the server on an interval that you choose. There are a number of online resources that document this technique, such as http://grizzlyweb.com/webmaster/javascripts/refresh.asp

To use the runtime across the Internet, you would need to setup a WAN and use Windows networking.

      Lenny,

Thank you so much for your quick reply. It certainly is a useful site and will give it a try.

On the windows networking, i assume that when an XP or Win98 client connects to a Win2003 server via RAS will constitute a "windows networking"

I can then share a folder in Win2003 server and access this via the XP on dial-up RAS. The question now is how effective this will be and has anyone actually tried using it this way (via dial-up). Taking in consideration of A5's "shadow" installation..

I would value the forum member's opinion on this.

      many thanks,

      Carlo M.

RAS will work. However I think you will be disapointed with the perfomance over dial-up. If you search the A5v5 and A5v4 message areas, you will see several posts discussing this.
