    Default sort by Biblical order

Is there any way to get AlphaFour (V8) to sort by the order of the books in the Christian Bible?

One of the things I'd like to do when I retire is to create a database of sermons I've delivered. I would want them to sort in biblical order to be able to find things easily.

    Any ideas?

Make sure you include the BOOK_NAME as a field in your database, then you can sort by book name.

If you want to sort by the sequence of the books' name, include a SEQUENCE field which you can determine by a lookup of either an external database (which would have 2 fiields - BOOK_NAME and SEQUENCE) or an internal table in the field rules.

Thanks very much. I think I can figure out how to accomplish this--retirement isn't for a year, so I have time to play around with it.

If I set up a sequence field, will it then secondarily sort by chapter and verse?

    Philip,

Rule One - 'there ain't no magic'. You can sort on whatever sequence you wish - first by book, then by chapter, then by verse, but you have to set that up.

It's not supposed to be magic! It's supposed to be a blessing from God. Now if I could just get him to write the "code!"

    I'll get it figured out.

    Thanks for your in-put.

    Phil,

It just seems like magic (sometimes).

Assuming you have an A4 database with three fields named, Book, Chapter and Verse, you could sort them by:

from the Alpha Four Main Menu, select Search/Sort lists, One-time search/sort, Expression Mode, tap [F4] and enter 'Book+Chapter+Verse' (minus the apostrophes). Tap [F10] and your list will be sorted and you will be back at the Alpha Four Main Menu. Tap 'B' (browse) and you will see a list sorted in the order we just built. If this is what you want, you can go back and create a saved search/sort that can be reused as needed.

    No magic, no code!

Rather than do sorts when you need them, why not create an index based on those three fields? Then, whenever you want to run your report, just use that index as the basis for the report.

Even when you add new records, the index is automatically updated and there is still no reason to run a sort.

There goes the summer! Now I'll have to get on this and at least set it up.

I'm thankful to all who responded. I'll save this thread!
