Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Remote Access software for WinXP that works well with A4v8

Hi. We have used a program for years called Proxy that is put out by Funk software. www.funk.com . It is not free but it works really great for remote access and it works on all the various platforms we use (all windows versions and dos and netware). You can run Alpha full screen within a dos window. And it handles remote printing using the a4v8 windows drivers and has a great file transfer feature. It is much less overhead than any other remote access program we tried.

      Dave,

Most A4v6 and up versions do not like PCAnywhere. I'm not sure of the reason, but it constantly gives problems when accessing A4 (Keys that take minutes to be accepted).

I suggest using a VNC variant. I use UltraVNC available at
      http://www.UltraVNC.com

It also has the side benefit of being free and works well.

Thanks for the suggestions - we settled on RealVNC and it works well enough for our purposes.

Hey. I have used PCAnywhere trial version on XP computer and it works good. Additionally, I have even used logmeinrescue, gosupportnow, etc. remote support tools demo versions and they are good too.

I've used gotomypc and it runs a4v8 great. The issue is printing with it but if you transfer your dbf databases to your local computer you will be able to print.

I've tried just about everything out there, and for printing remotely, I've found Teamviewer to be the most reliable.

We access our system remotely on a regular basis and Teamviewer has worked very well for us.

I didn't start using Teamviewer until v10 of Alpha, but I am sure it will.

It should print from any application that runs from within Windows.

They have a free version if you'd like to give it a try.

I've been using GoToMyPC for years for this very purpose. It works fine so long as you remain within a window. Full screen mode doesn't work

Are you able to print when you login using GoToMyPc.com? My work around is to transfer the files I use to print with in A4v8 and then print from my locale machine.

I hope you have a better way of printing.

                        Re: Remote Access Software

Because I'm running A4 in XP compatibility mode which itself is running under Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, I decided long ago to make all A4 printed output go to an XPS printer. This had the effect of transferring all printed output (in XPS format) to the Windows 7 operating system under which XP compatibility mode is running. This might seem left-handed but it has a number of advantages, one of which is it allows the users to freely print the XPS printed output to any Windows attached printer they like, networked or otherwise. They can also easily reprint reports they've managed to lose. Although this isn't the reason I did things this way, it also plays right into GoToMyPC's hands because, instead of printing the XPS file to a local printer, I can just as easily print it to the GoToMyPC printer which you can assign (in GoToMyPC) to any printer you like at your end.

Of course, you don't have to be running in XP compatibility mode in order to print to an XPS file. If you're running A4 natively under, say, XP you can still print to XPS provided that you've installed XPS on XP. Hope this helps, it certainly works for us.

                          Re: Remote Access Software

I've kept 6 computers with Win XP operating system in them. This i s for my staff to run the A4V8. Also I have one person that's running an office in another city. This is where my issue is. They have to use the GoToMyPC to tie in and then do the transfer to print. Either I need to complete my Alpha Anywhere version of my program or learn how to setup XPS. I know I am going to sound very dumb but is there a driver for XPS or how do I send the data to print using it?

                            Re: Remote Access Software

You'd have to download and install the XML Paper Specification essentials pack - here is the link - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=11816
You'd find this adds a printer called XPS Document Writer (or something like that). You can then point A4 to that printer in the same way as you do with any other windows printer. When you print to that printer using A4, a dialogue box comes up asking you where you want the printed output to go (just as if you were printing to PDF). Once it's printed to an XPS file, you double-click on that file, Print ... and this is where you can choose which printer you really want it to go do, including the GoToMyPC printer. In summary, installed XPS is much like installing a PDF printer, and the way you use it is the same. In fact, now I've said that, if your A4 supports printing to PDF, maybe you could use that instead of XPS?
