Default file not found or access denied

I'm finally getting some results with my attempt to convert my files from a4v6.2 to a4v8 -- however, do have one significant problem. Whenever I go to open any database "set", I get the following message:

"File not found or Access Denied
opening *.RLN (where * = any set name but "RLN" is always the same)
YOU MAY NOT HAVE READ & WRITE PRIVILEGES"

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO ELIMINATE THIS PROBLEM???

    PLEASE HELP!!!!!

By chance, when you upgraded from 98 to 2000, did you copy all of the files to a cd, upgrade the os, and then copy the files to the hard drive? (Or something similar?)

It's more than likely that the file attributes are now set to read only. You'll need to change those properties for A4 to work with those files.

If that's not the issue, 2000 has file permissions that may be set wrong.

I'm putting my money on the first cause and effect I mentioned.

Al -- Thanks for the info. I did do exactly as you had asked concerning copying the files to a CD, upgrading the system and then copying the files back to my hard drive. Will I need to reset the properties manually by editing each file or is there a setting that I can change in either Win2000 or A4V8? Do you think that it was only on the dadabase "sets" or all files?? I'm not at my office at this moment so I'm not able to look. I was able to open individual database ".dbf" files yesterday but I didn't try to make any changes to any existing record or create a new record in the database.

Thanks for responding so quickly -- maybe you know the answers to the additional questions I'm asking.

You should be able to open the directory from a windows folder, select all of the files, and reset the ready only attribute in one move. It'll take a right click, the properties choice, and change the read only attribute to unchecked.

    1. This has been posted numerous times on this forum and others. Use the search feature of the forum or browse the entries that are here.

    2. Next time that you move something from one computer to another, try zipping it first, put the zip on the cd, and then unzip to the target. It's a good practice to continue in the windows as well as DOS systems.
