Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Ver-7 - FULL Windows Screen Problem

    Hello,

I have A4 Version 7 running on a Windows XP Home System. I cannot get the screen to open fully. Tried everything!

I get full width but only half height. And then the fonts are hard to read.

Can anyone please email me a solution to this? It was working okay at one point, so I know it's possible to do. Just can't get the right combination of settings...

    Help!!!

RE: Ver-7 - FULL Windows Screen Problem

Try clicking in the upper left hand corner of the home screen. As I recall that will open a screen that will allow you to set the window to full size. I know the answer to your question has been answered in this forum previously. I found it about a month ago when I upgraded to xp.

    good luck

    Will

See the document "What's new in Alpha Four V7" for instructions; i.e. go to Start Programs Alpha4 V*...etc.

RE: Ver-7 - FULL Windows Screen Problem

        Hi,

I have looked there and have installed everything properly. It had worked on this machine awhile back, but now for some reason, it won't allow me to get a full screen.

I was wondering if it had somethng to do with the "Batch File" that loads A4...

Still need an answer to this one...

RE: Ver-7 - FULL Windows Screen Problem

Try creating a shortcut on the A4.EXE file and see whether or not you can get a full screen. You can place the parameters in the command line of the shortcut. You don't need to use a batch file.

Could somebody please tell me whether or not you have been successful in running version 8 with full screen on a laptop with XP operating system. If so,on which manufacturer and model numbers?. Will IBM Thinkpad work?Would very much appreciate a reply.I have been unsuccessful in getting more than half screen but am told it may be hardware dependent.

RE: Ver-7 - FULL Windows Screen Problem

I installed A4 on my laptap with XP Home
I struggled for ever but I think it was the ALT ENTER that did the trick. It seems like smoke and mirrors.

                Icon on desk top
                Properties
                C:|A4.BAT
                Start in C:\
                Run Normal window

                Compatibility mode
                Checked Windows98/Windows ME

                Display settings 640x680

I hit the icon and A4 opens in a partial screen

NOW the SECRET, I think, hit ALT ENTER
and one gets the screen you have been used to for ever.

                Hope it works

                Steve

Thank you. I tried it and couldn't make it work on my configuration - unfortunately. Help from anyone who has successfully mastered the full screen would be much appreciated.

I have a DELL 4600 with Windows XP and was able to get "full screen" by right-clicking on the Alpha title bar to get a menu that had a "full screen" option. This is also covered in the \ALPHA4V8\AlphaFourV7.pdf document, pages 4 & 5. Also, ALT/ENTER worked just fine on my machine. Hope you get your problem resolved -- I have one of my own tryig to print a report, which I'm going to pursue.

RE: Ver-7 - FULL Windows Screen Problem

It's really a matter of luck. I've run Alpha4v7 on three different computers. Every time I've had trouble customizing it, every time different problems.

The screen size is always a problem, and I don't believe there's a single answer. I suggest you cycle through the (many) alternative possibilities, attacking the problem unsystematically from different angles, chipping away at the different layers at which 'properties' can be set. Layer 1, the 'properties' attached to the desktop icon. Layer 2, the 'properties' attached to the various A4v7 exe files in the program directory. Layer 3, the 'properties' you get when you click top left on the Alpha4v7 Windows window (if you happen to get one). I don't think using logic on Alpha4 necessarily helps. It's pre-logical. Just try something, or rather a combination of things, and be prepared to try 25 other things. The key is hitting a lot of keys in those 'properties' screens. Some combination will, eventually, suit your machine. Leave a monkey long enough with a typewriter, and he just might write Shakespeare.

At the moment, I get a full screen when I click A4v7.exe, but only half screen (NOT a window) when I click A4.exe. That's fine by me. I certainly did NOT get to the Holy Grail (Full Screen) this time, the same way as I did last time on my laptop, nor was that the same as when I put it on my workstation. How did I get them to work? Oh, forget it. It's different on every machine. What's the use of remembering or explaining?

The key to Alpha4 is to do transfers to new machines when you're not stressed out, and can tolerate the program's irrationality and quirkiness.

Re: Ver-7 - FULL Windows Screen Problem

I have achieved a full screen for A4v7 on my new PC. But when a Yahoo Messenger message arrives, boom, the display reduces to an in-window half-screen display (in a different color scheme).

                        Anyone know of a cure?

This was the trick for me.

                          Microsoft artical: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272447

To work around this issue: Follow exactly!!!
                          1. Start your MS-DOS-based program in a full screen, and then press ALT+ENTER to display the program in a window.
                          2. Right-click the CMD icon, and then click Properties.
                          3. Click the Layout tab, and then lower the height value for both your Screen Buffer Size and Window Size from 50 to 25.
                          4. Click OK, and then save the changes for future use.
