Doing a system expansion/roleout of an a4v6 installed on a single win98 system to a4v8 across a domain. New setup is 4XP WS and a 2000 server (active directory). I have spent 350 hours attempting to get this thing to work properly to no avail. The problem I am having varies depending on the way in which I configure it. Here is a few of the things I have attempted. (Note A4 must be launched using an app developed in a4 so a .bat containing various tags and the -A=x:\dir\appname)
1. Installed a4 on xp workstations, droped the dbase files, script files on server and mapped a drive to the files. Created a .bat file pointing to the location of the network files. Of course I added the network drive to the enviromental settings. Various configurations have been made in this manner and various errors occur. I get a cannot initialise printer dbase, or it just will not print to a windows based driver (prints to DOS driver on a HP4000 series??).
2. Installed a4 on server, and mapped drives to the program files and launched it on the XP systems with a batch file. Here the problem is that a4 requests a dbase or set file upon loading, it also will say I have to close a dbase cause the desktop is to full after a few logins- of course related to the fact that it retains the last used desktop and files but still requires me to load one! User configuration clearly states the desktop and saved startup settings. However it prints likes this.
3. Follow the steps in the a4v6 reference guide in every manner! Launching A4 on the XP systems and specifying the data, script, etc. directory on the networked drive. This gives me the problem with requiring me to open a database when the apps first macro is to open the 1st dbase in the desktop , and the "private" files (desktop, etc) load as they should, in the order specified but with the extra dbase or set included in it. Also I create a simular configuration that the application will not load.
WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY to NETWORK systems like this. I have read the A4v6 reference many times and need configuration details or help. Take note, I am an MCSE+I and BBA in CS and 10 years in IT, so I have tried many many system settings from simple to advanced and I would hope that the solution could easily be comprehended. What is the deal...?? Any help would be worth rewards! Thanks!
