Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Attn: Alpha Software - licensing

This question is for someone at Alpha Software with regard to the licensing for Alpha 4 Version 8.

We are having trouble with "License Count Exceeded". Here is the scenario. We have purchased licensing for 85 users. We are on a Novell 5.1 network which includes 6 different offices each with its own standalone server and set of Alpha applications. There are a total of 90 computers running either Windows NT 4.0 or Windows XP across these 6 offices. We have gone to each office to find out how many people are using the Alpha applications, whether or not they have mulitple copies of it open (Shouldn't happen, but we do ask). We have done this on several occasions and the user count we come up with never totals more 81. But we get the "License Count Exceeded" error anyway. Although we haven't been able to tell for sure, it appears the problem starts when the count gets within 7 or 8 of the maximum. We experimented in one office to see what would happen with the count on the Alpha status page (when we press the F3 key). 5 users would open Alpha and the count was 71. We had the users close Alpha one by one and we would check the status page on a computer that had Alpha open after they closed. In some cases the count would go down, but would not for others. It didn't seem to make any difference if it was an NT or XP machine. 3 of the users kept Alpha open waiting for other users to have the "license" error arise. When that happened, we checked the status page. Alpha would tell us the licensed users were 85, network users was 1. We had the 3 users exit Alpha to see what would happen. We do the status page check and the same error, licensed 85, network users 1.

Can you offer some help please?

    thanks,
    mike reed

      having similiar problem

We are having a similiar problem receiving the message that we have exceeded our licenses, however, on a smaller scale. We are also on a Novell network and have a 3-user pack -- the number of users shows more than three although there are only 3 of us using the software and on the network. If two users logged onto the Novell network with the same user name it would let all 3 of us use the system. Our network went down for a few days and when it came back up only one user can access a common database and the system information still shows that there are 3 users logged in even though only one person is running Alpha4V8. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have used Alpha4 since it came out and love it as it has been problem free pretty much for a long time. I really appreciate any advice.

We have had similar problems, on the F3 status page check the Network type. We use Netware also and only see NetWare, once in awhile for some reason a machine will decide to turn on NetBios so that you see NetWare/NetBios and we see the coniditon as you described above. We use a registry hack to correct the problem but I think I saw another related method to resolve this in the forum, here is the link to that thread.

        NetWare/NetBios

I have come accross this problem before.
I to run Novell 5.1 and here is the problem...

A user running Windows locks up or reboots without logging off this holds a count open for the alpha software.
Using the monitor screen under Novell check to see how many connections are connected to the alpha folder containing the count file...
          The Fix I found.
Updating the Novell client and checking the settings for "advanced Settings"
File Caching and File Commit I have changed to ON...
I have not had the problem in a year now..
