Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Launching A4v8 apps in XP

What is the best way to create a shortcut for an application? I am switching applications from A4v3 on Windows 98 to A4v8 on Windows XP.

Create shortcuts on the A4.EXE file. Edit the properties of the shortcut and add you parameters to the command line.

You can create a shortcut for each of your applications.

      Gedi:

My attempts to create shortcuts for applications has failed.

How can I obtain a more detailed description of the process or an example of a shortcut that works?

        George,

The date was quite a while ago so perhaps you solved your problem. The shortcut that was generated for me when I installed v8 in XP was as follows: (my software was installed on drive E)

        Target: E:\alpha4v8\unwise.exe /w/ "E:\alpha4v8\install.log"

        Start in: E:\alpha4v8

        Run: Maximized

This would be the alpha icon found in your group folder with the other alpha icons. If you have that, then just right click to duplicate it and drag it to your desktop, your quick start area or whatever.

        Hope this helps.

          Judy,

          Thank you.

Yes, your example helped me to learn how to launch Alpha4v8, but I also want to tell it to open the D:\Alpha4v8\VIDEO.DBF and to execute the application command ie, -A=D:\Alpha4v8\MAIN.APP.

            George,

I am just struggling through this myself. I have v6 on a 98 system, then didn't use it for 4 years. I have now graduated to v8. It is amazing how much you forget in 4 years. I am using the same scripts that I had written before and just trying to get the whole thing to work (it is stuff I do for the homeowner's association).

Anyhow, I have now successfully gotten it to set the script path correctly and I hope load my preset variables. Look at page I-9 of the a4v6 manual and I think you will find what you are looking for. Then edit Alpha Start2.bat which is found in your a4v8 directory. Right click on your edited start 2 bat and tell windows to make you your shortcut.

It works for me, hopefully it will help you. It is so confusing as you are never sure they are talking about what you were given in your files. Much of the stuff that I have read here doesn't seem to work for me. For example I was having a file handle problem and it was said to check config.sys. Then someone on this forum finally said if you had XP you checked config.nt. Worked much better!
Once it gets set up, it should be much easier from then on.

I just found out that by making the shortcut start2 I couldn't print! If you use the original shortcut I gave you but edit the start2 thing you should have the best of both possible worlds.
