I'm new to this (or any other) forum(s).
I've been an intense user of A4 up to v6, and have recently bought v8, but haven't yet installed it.
I now want to get it going urgently.
The reason for my delay has been that when I try to install, it seems like I should already have installed an earlier version first.
The reason why I haven't previously installed A4v6 is because I have always kept it on a separate machine I reserve just for DOS applications (mainly A4).
In turn, my reason for not installing A4 on my Win98SE machine has always been for the following complex reasons which I have never been able to get an answer on:-
(1) I use A4v6 for my business, and have over many years built up many complex systems, which I use constantly, and can not afford to interupt.
(2) In designing these systems, I have needed to tweak the memory allocations on bootup, in order to avoid crashes caused by insufficient memory.
(3) The only way I have been able to acheive the maximum usable memory in DOS has been by using a combination of Qemm8, and 4Dos (which replaces the Dos6 Command Processor, and allows many things to be Loaded in High Memory, including most of itself). By getting the 4Dos CP mostly in HM, you get a huge extra chunk of usable memory. Also, I needed to set my available File Handles to, I think 200 or 250, which needed Qemm8 to load them High.
(4) 4Dos also offers many extra, and more versatile Dos Commands than Dos6 itself, which I have made use of in my A4 systems, so I really need to be able to get access to these 4Dos commands under Win98, which I understand is possible, but I haven't yet found out how.
(5) Although I've asked around a lot, I have never been able to find out if Win98 actually takes care of the memory sufficiently to allow enough usable memory to keep by A4V6 systems running properly.
In fact, I haven't yet gained enough understanding of how to get into the workings of Windows (and if I will need to set the File Handles Parameters, or not), as I've found it a lot harder going than Dos.
(6) Besides (5), I had more or less abandoned my further development of A4 systems, when they stopped developing it after v6, until now they've picked up again on V7/8, and I hope they continue to develop it. (I tried windows databases, insluding A5, and I just didn't know enough about programming, to make any effective use of them).
So, in summary, has anyone else found the same problems in Dos as I did?... and will Win98 sort out the Memory & File Handles for me?.... oh, and has anyone else had experience of 4Dos, and how it works with Win98?
Cheers.
Tony.
