Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    REBUILD A CORRUPT DBF FILE

    Hi Evereyone,
Is there a function or an idea that I can use to fix a corrupt DBF file in A4 V7 Full version and Runtime. I have a client running an application with A4 V7 Runtime & one particular DBF file will not open and we cannot even extract the data in it using the APPEND utility - A4 reports that the DBF file is corrupt and cannot read from it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Adavnace.

You can try to open it with excel or access, they are sometimes forgiving of problems. Other times more demanding. Another option is to get a dbase utility like dsalvage. Search on google or yahoo to find what is available.

Did you see my request in Corrupt file. We used to be able to put in the information prior to the corrupt file and the system would work. That was before we upgraded computers to XP Pro. I am working on that problem at the office today.

RE: REBUILD A CORRUPT DBF FILE

We had the problem come up this past week again in another one of our files. We look for the last record, then put in a record number past that file and it worked. Example: Record No. 249 okay but record 250 corrupt, then just enter data and set the new record at 252 or 253. Ignore the fact that the system says corrupt and enter the file anyway. If you can just pack the records so that the corrupt file gets deleted and packed. Another time we just copied the database and gave it a new name. It worked.

              Jan,

I would try to find out what is causing this. There may come a time where it's not recoverable. It sounds like the EOF pointer (End of File) is the culprit.

Copying usually solves this problem. Say test.dbf is non functional due to corrupt dbf. What you do is just copy test to test1.dbf, then zap original and append all records from test1.dbf. Of course, while copying, alpha will complain, but it will copy all records except the last one. Hope it helps.

ANSWER - how to fix corrupt databases in one minute.

It is not necessary to rebuild a corrupt database. All corrupt databases can fixed in less than one minute.

                  The solution is :

                  Open database to main screen

Copy the database but only one record(just pick a not recent record number at random; include "all", I usually name this database "FixMMDD" (( month Day))

Open original database to mainscreen and append the FIXMMDD.dbf.

                  You're done.

Occassionally you may have to update indexes. Very rarely are any records lost and when it happens those few records are clearly garbled.

I've been doing this for three years with no problems.

If you have fields that increment you'll have to adjust that for your last valid value.
