Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dialog script problems in V7

I am running V7 on XP. I create keystroke scripts in the default script path (Alpha4v7) because it won't let me do anything else. lol. I access (Alt-F4) those scripts and they play just fine. However, I tried creating a Dialog script that incorporates some of those keystroke scripts and it tells me it can't find them. I've been using Alpha4 since V2 and never had this problem with the other versions. What's up?

    Happy Christmas Bill,

Have you looked (through Windows Explorer) to check that your dialog script shows up with the other scripts you are using?

Keith-- Thanks for the reply. The dialog scripts won't save at all because I am told that the keystroke scripts can't be found, therefore the scriptmaking process is aborted. My intent was to make a "tools" script as I've done so many times before in other versions of Alpha. You would think that after using a program for over twenty years that things would get easier, not more frustrating. There are other problems I am having also. V7 is like an evil stepchild. Shame on Alphasoftware.

Have you tried looking around (in DOS via ) to find out where all of your scripts are? Then, copy, or move, them all to a single directory.

Sorry, some keystrokes after "via" were missing. I meant that you should use Alt/F9.

            Hi Bill,

What you are saying is, you have scripts already recorded and saved, you are then creating a dialog script, then you must be pressing F2 and placing controls in the dialog.

Are you "selecting" the scripts for the controls, or, are you typing in the script names?

RE: Dialog script problems in V7

I'm F2ing and selecting the scripts, Keith. I've done it successfully in Win95 and Win98 for years with earlier versions of Alpha4. I just tried typing the keystroke script name instead of selecting it Same result. It tells me it can't find the script and aborts the process. The script path is the default Alpha4v7 and all the keystroke scripts I've created are there. No scripts are lost. Not having the dialog scripting capability is not the end of the world for me but it sure would be nice if the function worked like it should on my XP. Am I the only one who can't create a dialog script with V7 on XP? Have I been cursed by the database gods?

                Hi Bill,

I am using A4v7 & Win98 here and it is working fine, I will try it on Monday at work with A4v7 & XP.

Speak to you on Monday evening,

RE: Dialog script problems in V7

                  Keith-

Thanks for your thoughts concerning my problem. If you are able to create a Dialog script using Button controls in V7 on Win98 then I must be doing something wrong. I pulled my tired old Win98 machine out of the shed and fired it up. On it are both V6 and V7 and I had the same problem with both versions. "ERROR! Unable to find/create script," even though Alpha4 knows perfectly well where the scripts are because the path is correct. There was, however, a Dialog script with Button controls on that old machine that I had created in V2 way back when I was young and virile. I copied the script over to the XP machine and, surprise!, it works perfectly and I can even edit it with no problem.

So the problem in V7 must be me. Or there is a quirk on the V7 upgrade CD I purchased in April of 2002. Here's how I try to create a Dialog script in V7:

                  1. Alt-F3 to access the Scripts menu.
                  2. I select "Create a Dialog script."
                  3. I give it a name and description then F10.
                  4. I choose a spot to enter the menu item and F2 for controls.
                  5. I choose Button control, type in the Button description, then Enter to Script.
                  6. I F2 for scripts then choose one.
                  7. I F10 to see how it looks then F10 to save.
                  8. ERROR! Unable to find/create Script!
                  9. I pour a stiff drink and contemplate madness.

                  What do you do differently?

RE: Dialog script problems in V7

                    Hi Bill,

I have just created a new dialog script following the list you created (which is EXACTLY how I would normally do it) and fortunately for me, but, unfortunately for you it works fine.

I dont know what to suggest, try running defrag on your machines, update indexes / field rules. You arent by chance starting Alpha through an application or start up script, which could be changing the script search path!!!!

Being British, Im going to have another cup of tea, perhaps you need to crack another bottle!!

                      Keith-

Thanks again for all your consideration. At least now I know the problem isn't me. It must be in the upgrade install program I use. I have the old V2 dialog script that I used as a template for the new one so my problem, after a fashion, is solved. Happy New Year to you.
