Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A4V7 Screen Size

I just installed A4V7 under Windows XP and the display occupies only half the screen. I played with various properties and nothign seemd to help. I did not have that problem on Windows 98.

How do I get to utilize the entire screen?

Start up DOS (i.e. Start, Run, type in CMD). Right click to get Properties. In Layout, set Width=80, Height=25. Then in Options, set Full Screen and Save.

It did not work. Let me tell you what I did and the current status:

I did Start > Run > Cmd, set Layout to width=80, height=25 and in Options set to Full Screen. The screen went into Full Screen mode. For what it is worth, right clicking does not allow me now to get back into Properties.

I also went to the Alpha Four V7 icon I placed on my desktop and right clicked and clicked Properties. The Options tab shows Display options: Full screen. The Layout tab shows Screen buffer size: Width=120 Height=500; Window size, Width=80, Height=25. For what it is worth, a graphic on this page shows that the full window is not being used. If I change it to Width=85, Height=45, the graphic fills the entire window, but after clicking Apply and OK and starting A4, only half the window is still in use.

        RE: A4V7 Screen Size

        Hi Gary

When you have the Alpha4 window open do you get full screen when you hit {ALT-Enter}?

If you get full screen mode then when you close A4 in full screen mode it will lode in full screen mode the next time you start it.

I have found that even though you set the properties correctly (full screen)for both the short cut and the A4 window it will open in the last mode when running, ie. if running in a window when closed it will open in a window.

          No.

When I hit Alt-Enter I get a nearly full Window screen with Alpha Four in the upper half of the window.

            Hi Gary

I remember reading a thread where someone set Height=80 and Width=25 and then selected full screen mode under properties for the shortcut icon.

So I ran a search for threads using "A4V7 full screen". There were a lot of hits for XP so I think you could find your answer there.

              RE: A4V7 Screen Size

This is for all who are going through the aggravation of getting full screen view under Windows XP for Alpha Four Version 7.

There is little you have to do.

Using Windows Explorer, right-drag to your desktop the a4.bat file in the Alpha Four V7 directory, creating a shortcut on the desktop.

Execute A4V7 from the icon. You will get a shrunken window. Click Alt-Enter and, viola, a full-sized screen.

I have tried playing with everything in the Properties screen of the Shortcut to no avail. Only this has worked for me.

Unfortuantely, you will have to hit Alt-Enter everytime you execute A4V7, but may that be the biggest aggravation you get out of using Windows XP. :>)

This does not work in Win 2000 - still get only one third of screen with A4 program, bottom half black.

                    RE: A4V7 Screen Size

An alternative that worked for me (at least with A4V6)..

in the A4.BAT file, right at the top...

                    Add in the following command:

                    @MODE CON: COLS=80 LINES=25

It's the good ol' DOS command to force your display into 80x25 mode.. overriding any buffering and lines you may get from Windows (which typically is setup to display 80x25 but with a 200 line scroll buffer.. Unfortunately, that scroll buffer also tends to override the LINES= parameter with it's value, so Alpha thinks its running an 80 x 200 line screen.. Hence the garbled display.

This generally will fix up any Full screen display problems under any OS..

For the record, it did not work with Windows 98. I will try it with Windows XP sometime this week.

There are numerous solutions to this on the board for 98,ME,2000,XP

Search and you will find it.

                          RE: A4V7 Screen Size

A small correction to the tip I gave earlier.. I now have seen my clients upgrade to Alpha4V8, and noticed that the startup scripts had changed slightly.

On his WinXP, the mod worked but had to be installed inside of the ALPHA_START2.BAT file, as shown below...

                          @MODE CON: COLS=80 LINES=25
                          a4v8.exe %1 %2 %3 %4 %5
rem There is no need to stop Winagent when exiting A4 because winagent.exe takes up so little memory.
rem However, if you do want to stop Winagent when exiting from A4, uncomment the following line.
                          rem start winagent "command=quit"

When he goes full-screen (ALT-ENTER) all is fine, and it works as it should.

I'm still waiting for him to try it on his Win98/SE machine, will let you know...
