Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    I AM CONFUSED

    Hi Phorum,

It looks to me that Alpha no longer sells A4V7. That being the case I need to buy
some version of V8 that will allow reports developed in A4V6 to be printed. The
application was written a long time ago but the users printer just went west and they bought a new HP that A4V6 does not have a driver for ... and none of the printer drivers in A4V6 will emulate the new printer. This is a stand alone system
running on 98SE and presently using A4V6 which is running great.

The question is: which version of V8 should I buy and how much does it cost? Or, is A4V7 still available?

    Regards,
    efs

    RE: I AM CONFUSED

    Edward;
It is my understanding that v8 is the only version of A4 now available. I know that v8 can send e-mail reports (like A5v5) and I believe there is a fax option. These new benefits are obviously superfluous to your client's needs, but everything about your A4v6 application should work with v8 (v8 is still v6 "under the hood")

Since it appears your only problem relates to a driver for the HP printer ... one other thought is that perhaps the driver for an earlier model of HP machine will work. If the new printer is a LaserJet, the HP III, and HP IV/V drivers with A4v6 work great on new HP LaserJets (I use them everyday with an HP 4050 and HP 1200). Newer OfficeJets are more problematic, but with a little mix and match (using an older HP OfficeJet driver), you may still get it to work well. It also will depend on whether you are using typeset or "normal" mode, but even in typeset, I use A4v6 with newer HP Deskjets fairly successfully.

So, there are lots of options. I would say that as long as your client stays with Win 98 and HP printers, you can probably stay wih A4v6.

        RE: I AM CONFUSED

        Ed,

This is what I would do.

I would install a PCI PNP parallel card and have her buy an HP 1200 laser printer. Set up the printer on LPT2.

That printer loves Alpha 4V6 and is very fast. All I did was remove the HP Laserjet 6L and plugged in the HP 1200. I didn't even load any of the windows drivers. We're using Windows ME.

In fact, once they start using the HP 1200, they will probably use it for all their printing.

Nonsense! I just purchased AlphaFourVer7 two days ago, direct from Alpha. They don't advertise it, but it's still available.

Re: contacting direct, but sorry...off subject here.

when I first learned of Alpha Four years back, I was quoted a price of $349 from a now defunt computer store Elektek. I said hell no and call Alpha directly...$99. From that I learned, always get the story right from the horses mouth...call alpha direct and ask them.
