Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Initialize PDF driver

alpha 4v8 is running on XP (naturally) - every time I start the programme, I get an error message that the programme could not initalize PDF driver. What file am I missing and where should it be?

    thanks,

    Andrew Osyany

    RE: Initialize PDF driver

There's a file called A4.DFL. Delete this file and see whether or not A4 starts up ok.

I also suggest that you upgrade to the next version of Alpha4 because you can run into problems with version6 runing under WIN/XP or WIN 2K.

      RE: Initialize PDF driver

Alpha Four V8 tries to initialise the PDF driver every time it starts. I think you have the PDF driver files and some support dll files missing. Reinstall alpha four again and it will copy all the necessary files.

      take care...

        RE: Initialize PDF driver

        Try this,

go to the command prompt and navigate to c:\alpha4v8

here, there is a install.exe file. At the command prompt type

        c:\alpha4v8\install_pdf "Email External PDF"

This will install the pdf driver and then when next time alpha four starts with winagent then you wont get the error message for pdf driver initialise.

If you still get the error message, please call Tech Support (781-229-4500). We'll provide you with a download which seems to fix the problem.

            RE: Initialize PDF driver

running install_pdf (without the argument in quotes) fixed the problem. Thank you.

Now, if you can tell me how to run the programme in an XP window so that it isn't "klunky"....

              RE: Initialize PDF driver

What do you mean by "Klunky"? If it means you can only view half the program screen then its a problem with windows xp setting. If you go to the Command window properties -->Layout and set Screen buffer-> height =25 and window size-> height =25 and then press Alt+ Enter you will get full screen.

no,"klunky" means that the system seems to store about three keystrokes - doing nothing, then suddenly jump ahead to where the three keystrokes would take me...

I've played with the buffer, and everything else I could think of, but the reality is so awful that I have now gone to Partition Magic so that when I'm mostly running Alpha4 or WordPerfect 5.1, I prefer to boot up in W98.

                thanks,

                A
