Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email External PDF

    I'm using A4v8 build 31/1/03.

I have been testing the new email facilities and all seems to work fine but with one exception. That is, with Email External PDF. I use Netscape (and have tried this with 6.2 and 7.01) and when I try to use email external PDF, I get a Netscape new message window which looks fine, with the PDF file apparently attached. However, when I try to save or send the email, I get the message:
"Sending of message failed. Unable to open the temporary file c:\churchm\temp.pdf. Check your 'Temporary Directory' setting"

Firstly, I'm not sure what temporary directory setting it's talking about. Secondly, this whole procedure with email external PDF works fine with Outlook 2000. Anyone any ideas?

    RE: Email External PDF

    Alan,

Email External PDF is the name of the driver to which Alpha Four prints reports when you choose this driver. This report is printed to a file called temp.pdf, which is stored in Alpha4v8 directory temporarily until you send the email or cancel the email. After you send the email using the default email client like outlook express or eudora the temp.pdf file is deleted from alpha4v8 directory.
Why are you associating it with Netscape 6.2 or 7.01. Does it have a email client? You have to set a default email client for email external and email external pdf printers like outlook express or eudora. I use outlook express and I dont have any problems. I think that the netscape email client is not the default client, if I am thinking in the right direction.

        RE: Email External PDF

Why should it matter what e-mail program you use? I was under the impression that Netscape was supported since Netscape can send e-mail's with attachments and it supports standard internet e-mail protocols. I personally prefer Netscape over Outlook. In the newsletter by Alpha it indicates a standard e-mail client. Netscape was one of the early e-mail clients so I would hope it works.

          Yeah,

you are right. Alpha Four V8 works with any email client as long as it is the default email client. I knew of only Eudora and Outlook express...

            RE: Email External PDF

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I agree with what you've said, it shouldn't matter what email client is used so long as it's the default client. Wben I make Outlook the default client it works fine, exactly as it should. However, when I make Netscape the default client and EXACTLY the same thing, it doesn't work and gives the error message mentioned in my first post at the time when I try to send the email. This applies whether it's a send immediate, or a send later. The result is the same. I have been keeping an eye open for new V8 downloads and I implenent them as soon as they're available (that is, at the moment I'm current up to 6th Feb).

Thanks again for your help and if anyone gets any further inspiration I'll be pleased to hear it.
