Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Window Size Control Under XP

I am using Windows XP Professional and Alpha 4v7. Is there some way to control the size of the window under this configuration? Under W98 2d Ed, there were numerous choices. I realize (as in a separate question I posed about cutting and pasting) that this may be an XP rather than an Alpha issue. But can anyone help?

as far as I can find, and I realize XP is very new, no there is no way to control the window size, and it is an XP issue... remember in XP there is no more real dos.... or so they say.

I too am frustrated by the window size of Alpha4v7 with Windows XP (Home Edition). I have tried setting the Program properties to Normal and Maximized and in each case the window is less than 25% of the screen. Choosing the Maximize button actually makes the window smaller!!

RE: Window Size Control Under XP

we have gotten a limited success in making a larger window by going to the properties settings and changing the font to a size 18 and then setting the screen resolution to the 800x600 which sort of defeats the purpose of having a nice size monitor. but it has been the only success so far. other than doing a Cntl-Enter which switches to full screen but still you only get about one half of the screen and then you have to switch back and forth by Alt-Tab to do anything else..... so keep trying and if you find anything better let us all know.

Well seems that we have a solution that works a bit better.....

start the A4.bat and right mouse click on the title bar... this will offer a menu and select properties, then go to the font tab... in the font list should be TT Lucida Console(it is on all of ours)choose that, then select the font size appropriate for your screen settings, for me on a 17" monitor running in the 1024x800 setting, the size is 24. then choose "ok" button at bottom, this will bring up another dialog box, choose "Modify short cut that started this window" and click "ok" then when you start the A4v7 again it will come up the same settings.

            Guys:

Agree with Randy and here's some other stuff I experimented with a while back - it's from an earlier post.
            ===========================
            Guys:

Couldn't wait to share this. I've experimented with screen sizing and window/full screen problems on a friend's laptop with XP Professional loaded and here's what I found...

Understand that, if you're experimenting with these changes, none of them will happen instantly - you must re-load Alpha to see what effect that each change has made. At one point a dialog appears asking if you want the changes just for the 'Current' session or 'all the time' - choose 'all the time'.

When Alpha appears in a Window, right click the Title Bar and choose 'Defaults' from the drop-down.

On the 'Layout' tab screen change 'Screen Buffer' to Width 80 and Height 25. [That's 80 DOS pixels wide and 25 lines high - sounds familiar if you've ever done a {Write} and had to tell Alpha where to start]

Now change 'Window size' to Width 80 and height 25.

To lock the window in a specific place on the desktop try 'Left' 3 and 'Top' 3. Uncheck 'Let Windows Position the window' otherwise 'cascade' will occur.

On the 'Options' tab, select full screen.

For the 'Fonts' tab, I selected 'Lucinda....' and set the size to 24.

IT WORKED ! This was XP-Pro on a Laptop but I feel confident that it will work on any desktop as well. It 'Windowed' nicely and displayed full screen even better from a color standpoint.

NOTE1: The Win9X ability to move from 'Window' to 'Full Screen' using [ALT]+[ENTER] is still available in XP.

Note2: I can't find the location of the 'Pif' file or whatever XP does to store this information and what I've shown here is a culmination of several changes made before I realized you had to re-load Alpha each time. Try the above and if that doesn't get it, fool around with the 'Properties' tab. I really feel that changing the 'Defaults' only, as noted above, will accomplish the whole thing.
