Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Batch file problem

I have been using a batch file for over 2 years via Alpha4v6 which has been working fine, now I try to use the same batch file with v7 & XP and get an error message "Invalid Parameter"

I can't figure out if this is an Alpha problem or an XP problem, but it is pointing towards Alpha as I can run the batch file outside of Alpha and it works.

    The command used is:
    copy c:Filename.asc gkrsco04pkrsco126-hp4000-ms

The first parameter is the server name, the second the printer queue.

    TIA
    Keith

    Keith,

Is the path the batch file the same now, as it used to be?

      RE: Batch file problem

      Hi Tom,

Yes I am using "exactly" the same file as I am on a Win98 machine. As I said previously, if I run the file outside Alpha, it still works.

        RE: Batch file problem

I'm guessing, wildly, that "hp4000-ms" or some portion of it refers to a Hewlett Packard printer.

Don't know much about XP but have noticed numerous posts concerning XP and printing.

If my guess is totally wrong, what does your batch file do?
        There can be only one.

          Keith,

          Perhaps I wasn't clear.

Are your drive and folder names the same now as before?

Does Windows XP identify your printer with the same identifier as before?

            RE: Batch file problem

Yes Stan the HP4000 is the Hewlett Packard 4000 printer.

The batch file simply copies the file from drive C on the computer and sends it to a network printer. (or I should say "doesn't)

              Tom,
As far as I'm aware nothing has changed, I'll check it out tomorrow when I get back to work.

                RE: Batch file problem

                Keith,

If you can run the batch file outside of Alpha Five, and it works, then the batch file is ok.

Think about how you're doing it.

Are you starting a DOS session, and changing directories, to run the batch file locally?

Are you clicking on a shortcut to the batch file? If so, have you examined it's properties to see where it's stored and where it's run?

It sounds to me like maybe the script which you use in Alpha Five is trying to run the batch file, but can't find it.

                  Hi Tom,

The paths of the printers has stayed the same as the Win98 machine.

                    Keith,

Your Copy command seems to assume that the ASC file you're sending to the printer is located in the same folder as the Copy utility. Perhaps XP has changed it's internal folder arrangement for these 'old' DOS utilities. Have you tried including a complete path to the ASC file, instead of just the filename by itself?

I think you mean have I tried putting>

                      c:
                      cd
                      cdcorbonustemp
                      copy SCORRIER.asc gkrsco04pkrsco126-hp4000-MS
                      PAUSE

into the batch file, (with the back slashes)

                      Yes I have tried that.

It seems very strange that the batch file works outside Alpha, and it also works on the copy we are running on Win98.

Yes the original batch file read:

                            Keith,

Last idea here would be to consider the possibility that Alpha Four is trying to run the second batch file before the first one has finished.

What happens if you change the script to do it in two completely separate steps?

Tom, thankyou for all your input, you must be as fed-up as I am with this one.

                              No Go,

Just tried seperating the 2 batch files that are run from the script, also created a new script which just runs the problem batch, come out of the applicaion (back to Alpha main menu) run the script, but still get the "Invalid Parameter"
