Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Exporting/Importing Problem with Alpha4 ver 7.0

When exporting to, and importing from and ascii/"," Delimited file, A4v7 proceeds the operation past the actual record count, forcing us to use a prior version to conduct that operation. Anyone else having that problem?

I recently appended a large db to another db using the ascii "," delimioted. No problem. As you may have noticed, Alpha4 uses the term "import" to create a new db, not to add (ie, append) to another db. bill

After reviewing and comparing my version of A4v6 with the new A4v7, I don't see any difference in functional terminology between the two.

So, I really don't understand what you are trying to say.

The new version counts records "past" the total record count. Same applies to importing.

        RE: Exporting/Importing Problem with Alpha4 ver 7.

...so a file with 500 records is appended or imported showing 501, 502, 503? How much past the actual?

Does the program lock up, does the append or import fail, or does all proceed as normal even though it appends or imports past the total number of records?

I am not sure that I understand your comment. When Alpha4 "appends" one group of records to another it is adding one group to another. So that if you append 50 records to 20 records, you end-up with a total of 70 records. bill

            Correct.
Or, in our case, if we append 25,000 records to 50,000, we get 1,209,300+, depending on how long I'm willing to watch this obvious glitch at work.

Correct, and if we export a file of 10,000 records to ASCII/"," Delimited, it counts past 20,000 or 30,000 ... I'm not sure how long it would go.

Do you think it may have something to do with counting child records?

                  try "packing" after appending. bill

                    RE: Exporting/Importing Problem with Alpha4 ver 7.

So, I should allow the processing (excessive counting) to continue until it stops, wherever that is? No, this is not acceptable.

Then, take the time and effort to pack. Why should I have to do that.

                    The bug should be fixed.
                    That's it.

I've appended with no problem. You may have mis-matched fields. Make sure that the fields you are appending are the same type, in the same order, and of at least the same length, as the fields to which they are being appended. That should do it. If not, I'd then try packing it just to clear the junk. I did about 500 records in about 2 minutes. bill
