Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    An Easy NOVELL 6.0 Inquiry....

    An Easy NOVELL 6.0 Inquiry....

I have a customer looking at upgrading from NOVELL 4.11 to either MS SERVER 2000 or NOVELL 6.

Are there any concerns with running the VERSION 6 DATA Engines and VERSION 7 DATA together accessing the NOVELL 6 SERVER OP SYS? I am current on the MS SERVER2000 data corruption issues and the need for version 7 upgrades.

..I suppose my question really is whether NOVELL has had to tweak their file handling techniques to compensate for Microsofts new way of doing things.....or is their world still clean.

    Your response is appreciated..... rt

    Rich,

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you, but I'd be interested in hearing the answers you do get. We're thinking about going back to Novelle since we've had so many problems with Win 2000 on our server.

All I ever see mainly for networking is MS products...NT, 2K, SQLSERVER, etc. But when I have asked in the past about which is more reliable, Novell or NT, the answer always came back Novell was more reliable.

My brother in law is the CIO for Whitehall Jewelers. They use both Novell and NT, and I'm sure a mix of others, for various reasons. They schedule a reboot of the NT server weekly just to clean things up and prevent problems. As far as Novell, he can't remember the last time that server needed a reboot for any reason.

I asked once in these boards or directly in an email to Selwyn what his experiences might have been, he indicated Novell was more stable.

Given the choice, I'd go Novell.

        Linda,

Been using Novell for the past 10 years. We start with Novell version 2. The latest version of Novell that we're running is version 5, we also have a server running version 4.11. Novell has been extremely stable for us. We got our first NT server up and running about 3 years ago. We had a few problems but nothing out of the ordinary. We did find we had to reboot at least once a month on the NT. The Novell server would run for up to eight months before something happen were we had to reboot.

My experience with Windows 2000 Server has been a pleasant one. (Note that we did not upgrade NT to 2000, all our servers were clean installs). We find that the W2K Servers are just as steady and robust, as the Novell's. We run a total of 8 servers here in our offices. We're down to only two Novell's. We're making the move to Windows 2000 Servers because of the many programs available to Microsoft vs. Novell.

We spread our workload across multiple servers.
        One for SQL2000
        One for Exchange
        One for IIS5
        One for Apps
        etc...

I have a friend that has Exchange2000, SQL2000, IIS5 and multiple other programs running on the same server and she wonders why she has so many problems.

I know that Alpha 4 runs better on Novell then on NT, not sure about Alpha 5, we don't use the program. Our last Alpha 4 program is being replace in about 60 days and at that time the last 2 Novell's will be going offline. There just to many tools and a lot easier to use for W2K Servers than Novell.
