Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Utilities/Copy database

A4v7 will not copy a database.
    I type a filename, hit {F10}...
    and, it Quits.

    This is consistent.
    I have never succeeded at
    Utilities/Copy database,
    even after rebooting my PC.

    Pls advise.

    RE: Utilities/Copy database

Don't know if it's the answer, but here I supply a complete path along with the filename when I specify the name of the destination database. When I do, it works fine. I'm using Windows 98SE.

      RE: Utilities/Copy database

Tried full path & filename. It works.

If I Utilities/Copy using filename only...
A4 goes and checks the CD drive, even tho the CD is irrelevant to the task. If there is a valid CD in the drive, then U/C proceeds without incident. If there is no CD (or a bad CD), A4v7 Quits.

      Note re Version 3:
U/C with filename-only and empty CD drive.
A4 Ver 3 presents a dialog box [Retry/Fail]. Proceed by choosing Fail. Perhaps A4 Ver. 7 should do the same?

        Would not argue with that.

Is your operating system the same on both the vers. 3 and vers. 7 installations? (I'm wondering if this is an operating system issue which remains to be cleared up in vers. 7, or whether it's a change in vers. 7 that breaks things that used to work in vers. 3 on older operating systems?)

          Same OS, Win98SE,
          when comparing v3 and v7.

            RE: Utilities/Copy database

            Colin,

            I'm using Win98SE also.

Just tried Utilities / Copy to copy an existing table to the floppy disk, and to each of two cd drives in my system. No floppy or cd was present in any of the drives.

In all cases Alpha 4 Vers. 7 reported the failure as a bad path and did not crash.

My source table lives on the hard drive.

I did not start off with a disk or platter in any of the drives, did not introduce Alpha Four to any of the drives, and did not remove the disk or platter for testing. Just started from the hard drive and immediately attempted to copy to a non-ready external device.

              Colin,

I use a full path, including drive specifier and folder names each and every time I specify the destination filename.
