Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Files & Screen Problems in XP FIX

Sorry, I haven't tested it on an LCD screen. Don't know why it would be different. Did you follow the steps exactly? I have done this on other systems and it works fine. Some of the steps seem repetitive but they are necessary. Have you tried it more than once?

If you find the answer, please let me know.

      Thanks

RE: Files & Screen Problems in XP FIX

I have a system with both old win98 and XP. A4v7 works flawless on the win98 system, but no chance to run it on the XP in fullscreen mode. It shows a4v7 in the upper part and a black part in the lower part of the screen. The problem cant be with the LCD display. Its windows XP. I tried also the compatibility modes for win 95 and win 98. Maks no difference.

RE: Files & Screen Problems in XP FIX

I've been using AltEnter for full screens ever since getting XP, so your procedure was very helpful.

However, if you need screen dumps as I do frequently, you are stuck. XP will only paste a screen to Paint and then only for a window, not a full DOS screen.

If you have a solution for that, I'd be grateful.

RE: Files & Screen Problems in XP FIX

                  Hi Lu,
I have the exact problem. For whatever reasons, Alpha4v7 seems having difficulty bring up full screen on a laptop (LCD) with WinXP OS. But if I connect a external 15" monitor, it works perfect. I think it have to do with the hardware limitation. I have a Toshiba Satellite 1805. One more thing, XP supports two monitors simultanously. Check the settings under display properties, and make sure you are using the same setting for both monitors.
                  Does anyone have any suggestions?

                  Kevin

RE: Files & Screen Problems in XP FIX

I believe you are right when you say it's a hardware problem.

I have a Toshiba Satellite. If you run windows 98 with a screen resolution less than 1024 x 768, you will have a black border around the outside of the screen.

Alpha 4vx displays at 640 x 480. On my Toshiba, this gives a big black border, but so do all of my other DOS programs that display only at 640 x 480.

You can go into the BIOS and change the window to expand, but I don't like how the fonts are displayed. A friend of mine has a Dell notebook and Alpha 4 on his screen looks the same as if it were running on a monitor.

                      Paul --
I just got a Gateway with XP and an 18" LCD monitor. I've been running Alpha 4V4 for years and upgraded to V7 so I could run on XP. I'm having the same problem as Ludwig did back in January. It appears you were able to help him, but I didn't see the instructions on the network. Can you send them to me, please. Eternal gratitude in return, particularly as the tech person at Alpha software was unable to help and insists it is a microsoft, or hardware problem.

I installed A4V8 on an IBM laptop and followed the instructions below. The properties would not save. Alpha starts in Window mode. I must press Alt-Enter to go to Full Screen Mode. Anyone have an ideas as to why the SAVE PROPERTIES FOR FUTURE WINDOWS WITH SAME TITLE did not save the properties?

PROBLEM: "Program does not open in full screen"
Right click on program file (a4v7.exe, a4.bat, etc)

                        Click - SCREEN
                        Click - WINDOW
                        Click - APPLY
                        Run program
Right click on top of program window
                        Click - Click - PROPERTIES
                        Click - OPTIONS

                            I found it!
Unfortunately it does nothing to help..

I go to Attach index and the program crapps out...
I see some DOS text but it goes by so fast and program window closes I can't read it... It appears everything else I see runs just fine...

                            Any suggestions?
