Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Batch file startup problem

    Hello,
Apparently, I did not install Version 7.0 correctly as I cannot locate the batch file to use as a shortcut to start the Version 7.0 program. (I also did not install Version 7 in the Version 6 subdirectory.)
All I have for batch files in Version 7.0 subdirectory is alpha_start1 and alpha_start2. In the Version 6.0 directory, I have a4net.bat and a4.bat.
The reason I know something is wrong is that my HP Officejet will not print typeset documents.
Can I re-install the Version 7.0 again? If so, what file do I start to re-install it?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Jill H.

    RE: Batch file startup problem

    Jill:

Re: Starting A4v7. A quick way to tell whether you're installation is good is to open Windows Explorer, navigate to the Alpha4 program folder and look for A4.Exe if you can't see the 'Exe', highlight the A4 file name and right click for 'Properties' and look at the DOS name.

I you double-click that file's icon, alpha will start to the Alpha 4 Main Menu.

If you're trying to start an application writeback.

      RE: Batch file startup problem

I have problems running Alpha4v7 that I don't have running version 6. I use Windows 98. Here are my two problems:

      1) I can't get the program to start with a full screen automatically. I have instructed the start-up batch file to maximize and use a full screen. The program seems to ignor these instructions.

      2) I can't get it to execute DOS commands I put in the start-up batch file. I use such commands to make the program easier to use; such as, commands that turn-off the caps lock upon entry, and turn it off when exiting.

Both of these types of commands work fine on version 6.
Any ideas on how to solve my problem? Bill

          RE: Batch file startup problem

thanks, i did. it still doesn't work on version 7, but works fine on version 6. on version 7, the Alt+Enter expands the screen to cover the full window for that one session. when the program is re-entered you have to press Alt+Enter again. as i mentioned, the program ignors "maximize screen" and "full screen" commands on the start-up batch file. bill

            RE: Batch file startup problem

            Bill,

Try starting without the command line arguments and without using a custom startup batch file.

I have no trouble opening alpha Four full screen on my Win98 machine, but don't use any special startup sequences.

My guess is that something in your batch or command line sequence is causing the problem.

If you want to post both here, maybe someone can offer more specifics.

              tom-
well, i stripped the startup batch file down to a4v7.exe, and went from there. i added on the custom parameters one at a time. it was a small typo error. works fine now. thanks, bill

                RE: Batch file startup problem

I just use the icon in Ver. 7. It starts up everytime in full screen. Changed the icon that has the 5 tabs instead of 2 and the printer did NOT seem to work. So I went back to the two tab the install puts there on install.+
