Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: I have given up on A4V7!!

As a previous A4 user, I would highly recommend A5. After the short period of learning curve, new forms and reports etc, I am WAY ahead of the game. This program (A5) is HOT without all the problems I see in this thread. Think about converting to A5...you may be glad you did!

RE: I have given up on A4V7!!

What I use A4v7 for is to do quick clean up of databases and posting of information from one database to another. In this respect, A4, whether v7 or prior, is without peer. Its query language, its relational tools (especially posting and appending) and its keystroke scripts are so much easier for a nonprogrammer to learn and debug. Does A5 offer anything like the Deleting (should have been called Marking - but what's in a name?) for quickly marking records that you want to deal with in any one of a dozen ways?

If you are a programmer and you read the article in the recent newsletter about differences between scripts under A4 and A5, you will think A5 is a huge improvement. But if you are not a programmer and you have no idea what dimensioning an array is, if you want to conduct fast, fast, fast searches with the various expressions A4 provides, there is no tool that does it faster or better or more easily and intuitively. A4v6 had a tendency to crash - with never more than one record's loss of data - under Windows and I never liked A4 in any version for doing reports so I guess I didn't suffer all the agonies you guys did with printer drivers. But all in all, it is a fabulous support tool for my database needs.

        Michael,

A5 offers so many 'non programer' things I can't begin to tell you about. I am NOT a programer (or even close to being one)and I love this program. You asked about deleting a record. Easy, while in that record, right click your mouse and choose delete. Field rules are quick and easy as well. Keep in mind it is a windows enviorment and there is a lot of drag/drop features. Most of the language you are familar with is still there too (like 'field rules', 'posting', 'global updates'). Give it a try, I'll bet you will be glad you did.

          Michael,

Marking and unmarking are supported in Alpha Five, Version Four.

Unlike Alpha Four, however, if you delete a record, it's gone, unless you create a custom script to undelete it. These custom scripts are widely discussed and available, but are still required.

In A4, you have the option of deleting and undeleting a record. If you really want one deleted, you must pack the database to delete it. With A5, you can right click your mouse and you can: 1)DELETE the record, 2)MARK the record {this is similar to A4 delete} or 3)UN-MARK the record {this is similar to A4 undelete}.
