Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Scripts and missing field entry

I am trying to troubleshoot two database problems in version 7.0. I have inherited this problem and am not familiar with this program at all. I am getting a script error message and tech support has informed me to put the script path in the startup properties of the program. The problem I have is I don't know what the script name is and where it is located. Is there some way to find out what the name is?

I also have a problem in a form that when the user enters data in a field, it dissapears when you go to the third field.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ken: [someone named Ken can't bae all that bad]

I'm answering because no one else has. If you're new to Alpha we'll probably have a problem understanding your's.

How is your Alpha program running? That is.... is the screen that you have when the program opens displaying the words,"Alpha Four Main Menu"?. This would show a column at the left with 'View/Enter', 'Print','Search/Sort.." , etc. Or... does it open with a different 'Menu'.

Specifically, about the "..it dissapears when you go to the third field..." What dissapears - the text that the user has entered, the field itself, or does the entire program exit?

What operating system are you runing, i.e. Windows98, Win XP, Windows ME...?

Answers to these questions can get us started and we'll be here a while when we do.

RE: Scripts and missing field entry

      Hi Ken,

First of all, I agree that someone named Ken can't be all that bad!

      Thanks for responding.

The operating system is Windows 95. The server is Windows 2000 and the "G:" drive is the entire data directory where all the databases reside.

The Alpha Four Main Menu is what comes up when starting the program and the last database is shown. I think this is standard operation. The main menu has a section called Applications which goes into specific databases and reports.
I think this was customized by a previous employee. The print operation in question can be accessed by either menu option.

I did speak today tp tech support at Alpha Software. Let me just say that I am not thrilled by his customer support skills. Suffice it to say that today I did make some progress albeit with frustration.

Regarding the script error message, I found out the script names and where they are located. I also figured out how to set the script path in the program. I did have a blue screen lockup when I went to print packing lists (not the usual Windows blue screen). This I resolved by adding a DOS printer configuration to LPT1. The Windows printer config seemded to cause a problem. This I resolved late in the day and I was not able to perform extended testing.

The one remaining issue I have is that the text field deletes itself after I tab over to the next field to make a selection. Tech support said it had something to do with field codes or rules. That is where I'm at. I thought that version seven was to add enhancements to the printing, it seems that it really didn't make an improvement to me.

Thanking you in advance for your continued help.

        Hi Ken

I think you are trying to tab over to the next field for entry. This is a DOS program. You have to use the enter key to pass through fields.

          Thanks for responding Rick,

When entering field information, we are pressing return for the next field. It's just that the entered info disappears.

            Ken:

Sorry for taking so long. We've got the holiday and travel interruptions and we're back and ready. Listen don't be too critical of the Alpha tech supt. Alpha apps can be set up wildly different from each other and it is difficult for anyone to imagine exactly what you have.

I'll send you an e-mail with more help.

            Ken
