Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Program Error

I installed Ver. 7 from a CD received today on a Win2000 workstation and I get the following error message when I start Alpha4V7. "printdump.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log has been created."

    For what it's worth -

I get the same error from the download version.

Does any one know what is happening or what a fix is?

      Robert,

According to 'What's New in Version 7' the sole purpose of printdump is to create a list of all the Windows printers you currently have installed and report that information to Alpha Four. Do you have any printers installed? Are they unusual? Are they local or network devices? -- tom cone

        Robert

I get the same problem when A4v7 is installed on a desktop with only network printers connected. This is linked with my message string under "More Print Problems". Have you a only a network printer connected?

Yes, all of my printers are network printers.

              Robert,

So, have you tried installing a local printer driver in Windows, as I believe has been recommended in the other thread?

I installed a printer on LPT1 although there was no physiacl printer there and this did not work.

                  RE: Program Error

                  Robert,

I think printdump expects there to be at lease one local printer installed in Windows.

                  Open Windows Control Panel.
                  Open Printers folder.
                  Add a new printer.
Set it up as though you actually had a printer attached to the local workstation.

                  Reboot the local workstation.

                  Will Vers. 7 run now?

                    RE: Program Error

Assuming you 'added' a printer to the printers folder in the Windows Control panel, I suggest you reboot your system, and then try to run vers. 7.

If still no go, you will probably need to call tech support at Alpha Software.

Are you in the USA? If not, I wonder if the folks who are having trouble are all overseas? (Just looking for a common thread... wondering if there's a regional or code page problem here.)

                      RE: Program Error

I also tried to install a dummy printer to LPT1 and still got the error message. I am running Alpha Four V7 on a Dell Precision 620 running Win2000 and I'm in the USA. I have 6 network printers defined, a Acrobat PDF Writer also on LPT1 and a dummy printer on LPT2 for DOS printing that is captured and directed to a network printer.

Yes I tried that and still no go. I am trusting Alpha are looking at the problem (Selwyn has been in the thread).

I am in UK but it seems Robert has the same problem in US.

If you are receiving this error, please try the following command from the a4v7 folder:

                          printdump a4prndata.bin -debug > a4screen.log

And send me the following files:
                          A4prndata.bin
                          A4screen.log
                          A4prndebug.log

These files contain debug information that I can use to figure out what's going on.

The revised printdump.exe file fixes the crash but does not solve the printing to network printer problem. A4V7 only sees the local printer(s).
