Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A4 ver 7 "No more file handles left"

Hi I just downloaded Alpha 4ver 7 and cannot open a set. I get the error message "No more file handles left" I am running the program on Windows XP Pro.

This problem was solved for Windows ME by adding "PERVMFiles=150" to the 386 enh tab under System.ini

However it does not solve the problem for Windows XP.

If anyone has a fix on this please let me know.

By the way when I open a DBF file in full screen mode it only fills up 1/2 the screen and I cannot seem to get it to run in "full Screen" the way it did with Win 95/98SE/ME. So I am running it in a Window which is fine for me but is this another bug?

    Thanks

    RE: A4 ver 7

Called Alpha Tech Support and they have the following fix for file handles
when opening a Set in Alpha 4 version 7.

You need to edit the CONFIG.NT file found at C:wondowsSystem32 so
    that files=150 instead of files=40

There is probably an easier way to edit this file but here is how I did it:

    Left Click START
    Left Click RUN
type COMMAND to open the DOS terminal windo and get to DOS prompt
at the C:> prompt - type "cdwindowssystems32" without the quotes
    you should now be at
    c:WindowsSystem32>

type "edit" without the quotes and you should get to the Dos editor

    Click "File" and "Open"
find the file called "CONFIG.NT" and press OK (you will have to scroll
down to find it but it should be there)

With the file open scroll all the way down to the last line. Most of the lines
    are "remed" out.

change "files=40" to "files=150" (without the quotes)

Left Click (at upper left of DOS Window) "File"
Left Click "Save" and the Config.nt file is now saved.
Left Click "Exit" to get out of the DOS editor
at C:> promt type "Exit" to close the DOS terminal window

Reboot and you should be able to open sets.

      Court,

I tried this fix but when I went to c:windowssystem32 their is no CONFIG.NT File there. I looked at all of them and it's not there. I did find Autoexe.NT.

      Can someone help me please.

      Thanks Jim

Make one and save it to that folder - name it config.nt

          RE: A4 ver 7

the File config.NT does exist but I to had trouble finding it. Open up Explorer and navigate to Windows directory then to System32 Directory. It does reside as a file in this folder. It is a file - not a subfolder. When you're in the System32 folder sort the folder by name. Then scroll down below the sub folders of System32 and if they are arranged alphabetically you should be able to locate config.NT then open it with notepad and edit it.
