    Default Printing multi page reports

Since my upgrade to v7 I cannot print more than the first page of my reports to a Windows printer (HP LJ 1100A). Am I missing something?

Not clear why this is happening. There is nothing special that you should have to do to print a multi-page report.

    can you try this:

    1. in your a4v7 program folder, there is a batch file called alpha4.bat. it contains this. (note. this message board does not allow you type in backslashes, so in the code below, i am replacing the backslash with a forward slash/.)

    printdump.exe spool/ptrinfo.a4
    start winagent "|path=spool|delete=yes|keep_req=no"
    a4v7.exe -2
    start winagent "command=quit"

    2. make a copy of this batch file and call it a4debug.bat

    3. start winagent "|path=spool|delete=no|keep_req=yes"

    4. start alpha four by typing "a4debug".

    5. print your report to your windows printer.

    6. quit a4.

    7. go to the "spool" sub-directory that is beneath the alpha four v7 program directory.

    8. in this directory there should be a file with a .txt extension, and one with a .req extension. the .txt extension is your report. confirm that this file has multiple pages in it.

    9. zip up the .txt file and the corresponding .req file and attach them to a reply to this message.

    thanks.

I looked at the files that you sent me and I can reproduce the problem.

The problem is that the .txt file (i.e the report that you want to print) does NOT have a formfeed character between pages.

When printing to a Windows Printer driver, Alpha Four needs to have a formfeed character between pages.

The thing that is strange is that when you create a Windows Printer driver in A4V7, it is supposed to be AUTOMATICALLY configured to insert a form-feed between pages. I don't understand why, in your case it is not doing this.

If you open the file that you sent me (the .txt file) in Notepad, you will see that the first character in the file is a funny "box" character. something similar to this should be visible at the start of each page.

The attached file is an example of this generated on my machine.

    Here are things to test.

    1. create a new printer definition in a4 that references another windows printer.

    2. create a new report that has multiple pages in it.

    3. print the report. then look at the .txt file in the spool folder. does it have form feeds between pages?

I have tried this on three PCs (1 x W98 and 2 x W2000) and three printers (Okipage 4W, HP LJ 1100A, and HP Photoprint) and used different reports all with the same result. The form feed character does not appear in any of the the .txt files.

The reports are set up to do form feed after printing.

I have just loaded my new a4v7 and am having the same problems as Robert. I have gone through your suggested a4debug.bat and I too do not have the box character between pages in the txt file. Have you solved this one yet?

Is it possible to send me the database and report files so that I can try to duplicate the problem on my machine.

    Thanks

    Hi Selwyn

Thanks for the speedy reply. Having played around with my reports today I have found that in 'report parameters' if 'page breaks' = yes, then prints all pages. If 'page breaks'=no, then only prints one page of report and stops. Is this any help in diagnosing the problem?

Sorry I cannot send you my files for security reasons.

I too can not print more than 1 page of a report. I have an Epson stylus 600 on LPT1. Looked for the fixes suggested but no help.

The reason that you cannot print more than one page is simple. Your report definition specifies "No page breaks".

    To fix:

    1. Edit the report.

    2. Press the F7 key and select "Report Parameters"

    3. At the prompt: "Page Breaks", change the selection from "NO" to "YES".

Not that simple I'm afraid. I had already checked that and it still does not print more than one page.

    Selwyn,
My report parameters are "Yes" for page breaks. Only first page prints.

FWIW using Windows 98SE I'm able to print multi-page reports using a fixed width font on both a Xerox xdf125 printer/copier and also on a Lexmark Z53 color inkjet. In both cases if I had to try to set them up as a 'DOS Printer' under Alpha Four I'd be dead in the water.

It has been a few days without any further posts to this thread. Am I the only one still geting 1 page reports? An interesting thing I found is, if you reduce the line per page to 30 or 40 it will then print a page 2 header and continue to print whatever can be printed on 1 page. I also tried building a complete new report in v7 in case something may have dropped from v6 to v7. That only produces the same result.

Carl, I'll be glad to try to print your report here, if you will zip a copy of your database folder and send it to me, or post it here. If privacy is an issue you might create some dummy records and send those instead.

Did you see the other thread, posting a revised version of printdump.exe? Don't know if that will help, but thought I'd mention it to you.

    Tom,
I tried the printdump file as you suggested. After a battle with Windows eXtra Problems I finally got the file in A4. But trying a print still only gives me 1 page. For some reason the program will only accept 1 page of print. It will print additional page headers if you reduce the line items per page. Something is wrong with the program accepting more than 1 page of print. It is as if a report can be no longer than 1 page.
