Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

DDE to Word from Alpha Database

There are instances where it is not practical to use alpha software to print massive amounts of letters. Time and personnel constraints are always an issue. We have figured out a way to "POKE" database fields into a Microsoft Word Document template then instruct Word to print the document. This process eliminates the "layout" and "render" steps in Alpha.

The routines are xbasic for ver 1.02, but I don't think that ver 4 would be much different except for table syntax.

We use a routine similar to this routine to print approx 6000 monthly newsletters.

RE: DDE to Word from Alpha Database

    Hi Thomas;

I'm wondering if there are any limits as to how many fields and tables you can spit into a Word Document with this method, and also, how would one handle 1-Many records i.e. inserting tables from the database into the word document. If you have any insight, I'd greatly appreciate it.

RE: DDE to Word from Alpha Database

Addendum to my last message: I have an Access database that synchronizes to my PDA application. There's about 20 - 25 tables of data linked to the Contacts table. Some tables have a 1-Many relationship, others are simply 1-1.

The report I have to spit out into Word, is about 30 - 40 pages, and requires me to merge all that data into the Word Document. Problem with Access, is I'm limited to the # of fields in a query, plus importing tables is not very easy to do. I'm having to split the report into almost 12 sections, 12 separate mail merges! Maybe Alpha Five can sport me a solution to this "Access mess"!

RE: DDE to Word from Alpha Database

        Hi,

If someone wants to know the command language for DDE control of Word95/97/2000/XP. Look in the Word95 Developers Manual, all WordBasic commands are listed, it is old stuff but still current for DDE control of Word. Yes, up to WordXP there is still an wordbasic engine in Word ;-)

Watch out, DDE is almost obsolete!

RE: DDE to Word from Alpha Database

Sorry I took so long to reply. Don't monitor this forum too much. Didn't think anyone actually looked at our code. I would imagine that you can spit as many fields into word as you can comfortably handle. Remember, you need some sort of bookmark in word for each field. Keeping track will become some unruley. With a set - one-to-many, The data presented looks like one LARGE flat file, just with certain records empty or duplicated. I would guess that if you somehow were able to know where in the mess you were, then you could just do DDE from specific records.

Regarding your 30-40 page document, I would try to break it into logical sections and then DDE from alpha to each section, once again, for my own sanity.

          Good luck,

          Tom
