Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Copy Functions, menus, and toolbars

Attached is a zip file with an app that has 4 scripts to copy toolbars, menus, functions from one application to another and allow transporting scripts. The script copy code creates a table called "u_scripts.dbf" that has scripts attached. Copy the table to an app, and all of the attached scripts work as if they were created in the app originally. The scripts are saved in the tables data dictionary files, ddd, ddm, ddx.

Unfortunately, only scripts work this way. Menus etc must exist directly in the database alb, alm, and alx files. Therefore, the scripts to copy tollbars, etc actually copies them from one databases' alb, alm, and alx files to another database

Only one caviat. Adding new scripts to the u_scripts table is not particularly easy. If you create a new script you have to save it to the complete table name with path. To get around that, I just created an app that only contains scripts and then use the addscripts script to recreate the u_scripts table. During testing, attach the database as a library to test the scripts. When tesing is done, use the supplied script to create the u_scripts table.

RE: Copy Functions, menus, and toolbars

    Hi Jerry,

I have an application that I've used internally to do essentially what you are doing, but it is a bit more extensive. Since you posted your code, I decided to clean up my code and post it as probably the 1st shareware utility for Alpha 5.

It has no limitations for copying and is made to be relatively simple to use. Just specify source & destination applications, select those items to copy and then do it.

It was designed for Alpha 5 Version 4. I have not tested it with older versions. I also have not tested it with Version 5 (but it probably would work). But I suggest backups of the application before proceeding in all cases (better safe than sorry).

To visit my Web Site to download the application, click below.

Hope this provides a sorely needed utility for Alpha 5 Version 4.

      Hi Ira,

I just downloaded and took a peek. At first glance your utility looks quite beautiful. Felicitations!

One question; do you think it will be necessary with version 5? Possibly somewhat less so than with 4 given five's enhanced cut and paste facilities. What do you think?

For the moment, though, it appears invaluable.

      All the best,

RE: Copy Functions, menus, and toolbars

        Bill,

Probably with version 5 it will be easier, but managing code is always an issue. Of course, you can, in A5V5, make one humonguous, pre-compiled, password protected library, but that may be dragging more code than is necessary for many applications. However, I doubt if A5V5 will have that in there though (certainly not as a native routine)

I have also just added a new feature that does an explicit compare between the source & destination (assuming they both exist) items so that you can know if they are truely identical. It's a bit slow (not unmanagable, but I'll see if I can speed it up prior to posting the newer version) but works well. Let's me know what's really changed.

          Jerry, Bill and All,

I have placed the updated version 2.0 of "CopyApp" which now has full compare of source and destination items in applications. With any luck, the link below will work this time on the message board.

              Ira,
Very nice. I looked at some of the code to see what you have done differently and I got some good ideas and learned a few things about alternative ways to achieve the same results. If I had written the scripts for distribution, I would spend some time to combine them into one process. But you have already done that! Thanks

                To Jerry & All,

I created a new version of CopyApp. Version 2.50 now includes a logging file and also a totals table on the main form.

I created a new version of CopyApp to support Version 5 features.

Version 2.75 now supports Global bitmaps. The web site is
